(SR3) 3 CMOS sensor Alpha-mount high-res camera to be announced in April?
We know Sony is going to announce a new NEX camera and four new camcorders on early April (probably on April the 4th).
But there should be also a huge surprise…the “Mystery cam”:
Five different new sources sent me info about a “Mystery cam”. The info I did receive are quite incomplete and I need some help from other new/old sources to figure out what the camera is. The only thing I know for sure is that it is not the A77, not a fullframe and not a NEX camera. It sounds like this could be a high-resolution alpha-mount camera (or camcorder). But That’s SR3 only for now.
There was a rumor one month ago about a 3 Cmos sensor camera:
“Sony will release a new mirrorless camera with 3 CD (CMOS) sensors. Each of the sensors will be 6MP and the combined ISO will be up to 819 200 (up to 16mp combined image size). The camera will have an α-mount, contrast AF, 1.5x crop factor. It seems that working models are already floating around to selected individuals.” (Source: Photorumors)
All five new sources did gave me info that do support that rumor but with a few minor differences I need to check them before to post them here. But it sounds like Sony prepared an amazing surprise for us!

3 years ago |Well, bugger me!
If this arrives, there will be some major shake up I guess.
But I still don’t know how the 3 x 6MP = 16MP would ever work …
Oh well, let’s wait and see, April is just around the corner

3 years ago |The only thing I can envision is a scheme where each sensor is dithered with respect to the other by a fraction of a pixel, and then the processing algorithm on the raw conglomerate file creates the sub-pixels as an analogous yet distinctly different fashion to Bayer interpolation.

3 years ago |I don’t believe in such photo camera this year because limited Sony R&D capacity. They hardly working on A77? Hovewer in general this concept is much better than Foveon. For 3 sensor camera light sensitive area in each pixel is much larger and high ISO advantage is substantial. Of course it could be also video camera.

3 years ago |It’d be pure awesomeness!
Seriously, I’d be super-happy if Sony have released something like that.
Concept is amazing, only problem I have with it is CDAF – BUT: you don’t need fast AF always so for some purpose, like studio or macro photography, it’d be one of best cameras made.

that’s going to kill my d700 !!!!
And it’s going to kill my friend’s 5D2
If this is truth, there will be “sony camera rush” so Sony, you better have milions of them in the warehouse.

3 years ago |my bet is it’s an a-mount camcorder

3 years ago |+1, sounds like a video camera to me…
But, on the other hand, the line between video cam and stills cam is getting pretty blurred. Even if this is more oritentated for video, it sounds like it would be able to take some nice quality stills too.
SonyA77
3 years ago |Me too, I can imagine a new camcorder, but not a new stills camera. Where for example would a stills camera sit in the dSLR/SLT/NEX line-up? Doesn’t make sense to me to release yet another type of Alpha stills camera.

it would add to confusion and cannibalize sales of mirrorless -SLT

3 years ago |Sony is able to stabilisize 2 lenses and 2 sensors inside their new HDR-TD10E Camcorder… This is pure awsomness compared to the competitors (like panasonic). Why shouldn’t they be able to do it with one lense and thre sensors?
LifeStoryImages
3 years ago |As I mentioned above, they may even be sub-pixel aligned, so I’m agreeing with you they would have to move in unison with sub-mircon precision if AS is to work.
ANother interesting thought: for 3 sensors, you need two beamsplitters. We all know your the A33/A55 single beamsplitter works, but, where are they going to fit a second splitter in the back focal length (distance from last lens element to the image plane) of an a-mount? This would limit the sensor size and/or accepted minimum f/# in one axis. I speak as an optical systems engineer.

3 years ago |Potential high ISO
probably just marketing hype…multi shot stack
LifeStoryImages
3 years ago |Not hype if 6MP on an APS-C sensor x3. 3 pixels doing the work of what was 4 small pixels., but each new pixel 4x bigger – that’s 3.5 stops better performance right there. What was 64,000 is now… 720,000 There you go. Improved sensors and electronics, could be quite usable single-shot images.

3 years ago |What a brave man we have here. As usual…anoynmous. Why do you fear to display your real name?
PhotoNut
3 years ago |Hello, Admin. Why would I print my real name? Can’t I have an opinion attached to my username? I said the rumor is bulls**t because it is. There might be a 3CCD/3CMOS video camera but it is definitely not an APS-C one, much less an Alpha DSLR.
I appreciate the need for information about the Sony Alpha mount direction and I do check your site every day for news. However, I think that *some* of the rumors that get printed here seem to be fairy tales.
Like I said, Those who know don’t talk and those who talk don’t know!

Aha, so why did we manage to get the NEX specs two months before their release? So why did we get the info about the Translucent cameras one year before the release? Luck?

3 years ago |Hi Andrea, don’t take it personally! It is just an opinion like all our others. And: You have rated it yourself SR3. May I remind you that you yourself declared it as 50% chance to be correct and thus 50% chance to be wrong. PhotoNut just opted for the latter. So, what’s wrong with it…?

3 years ago |My guess (like john) is that this is a video oriented camera with the 6MP sensors possibly offering better options for shuttering (global shutter?) and higher frame rates as well as improved sensitivity compared with the single sensor NEX-VG10. I wonder how it will line up against the PMW-F3 single chip camera too?
Walt
3 years ago |The key piece of needed info is if it’s a pentaprism OVF. I’d take even a no AF 3 CMOS if it’s got a good OVF. Ah well, if the release date is right won’t be long.
I used the Minolta RD175, which used 3 CCDs. It stayed aligned for over 10 years, never needed repair. And I shot lots with it. Don’t see any problem with aligning a 3 CMOS.
Sky_walker
3 years ago |It’ll have EVF if gonna use three sensors. Not a chance for anything else, even hybrid VF.

Sky_walker
3 years ago |Hm…. that’s very interesting…. much more possible than 3 x CMOS with beam splitter, though at the same time… bit less interesting, and surely won’t achieve any huge leap in noise (but has some other nice advantages it seems).
Walt
3 years ago |The RD-175 had three sensors and is a OVF DSLR. Not sure why one would think three sensors require EVF. Unless Sony really are not very capable, Minolta had no trouble with making the RD-175.
