PRESS RELEASE

Dallas, TX — September 15, 2022 — Topaz Labs is announcing Topaz Photo AI, which automatically detects and fixes image quality issues with deep learning, allowing photographers to focus on the creative editing process in much less time.

Autopilot for maximizing image quality
Topaz Photo AI will help photographers maximize image quality faster and more accurately than ever before by pairing its extensively trained AI models and deep learning capabilities with its brand new Autopilot inspector and improved RAW workflow options.
“Getting a clean, crisp, and high-resolution photo is really important, but the current process of increasing image quality is quite slow and error-prone. To solve this, we’ve built Topaz Photo AI to be an autopilot for image quality. It detects the unique problems in your image and intelligently applies the correct methods to maximize resolution, detail, and clarity,” says Eric Yang, CEO of Topaz Labs.
Topaz Labs has spent years training and refining its AI models to address some of the most common issues affecting the objective image quality of its users’ photos. With the Topaz Photo AI Autopilot, Topaz Labs is taking it a step further by automatically analyzing photos and applying the most appropriate models and optimal settings, freeing users up to apply the creative edits that make their photos uniquely theirs, which is something that no AI model can ever replace.

The story behind Topaz Photo AI
Until now, Topaz Labs has offered three individual applications to address different image quality issues: DeNoise AI for removing noise, Sharpen AI for deblurring soft-focus images, and Gigapixel AI for upscaling low-resolution images. While each of these apps provides remarkable results within their unique purviews, the reality is that any single photo could suffer from multiple image quality issues.
A user may also not be completely sure which combination of applications would serve them best as they try to remedy those core image quality issues. And supporting multiple AI models in these applications makes things even more complicated, requiring the user to run through different models in different applications to get the best results.
“With Topaz Photo AI, we want to make the entire process of identifying those core image quality issues and applying the most appropriate remedies automatic and transparent. That process is exactly what we set out to build for Topaz Photo AI,” says Partha Acharjee, Topaz Labs Sr. Research Engineer.

Getting you to the creative editing process faster
Topaz Labs has spent years training and refining its AI models to address some of the most common issues affecting image quality. With Topaz Photo AI’s Autopilot, the company is taking it a step further by automatically analyzing users’ photos and applying the right models and settings, freeing them up to apply the creative edits that make their photos uniquely theirs and that’s something that no AI model can ever replace.
“Unlike our previous image quality apps, Topaz Photo AI is uniquely capable of not only detecting objective image quality problems but also automatically fixing various other problems without your intervention. And rather than having to go through every image to manually decide what needs to be done to improve it, Topaz Photo AI can do all of that for you automatically in a batch process,” says Anthony Lawn, Topaz Labs Product Engineer.
Autopilot rigorously analyzes each image intelligently and combines the power of DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, and Gigapixel AI to significantly improve image quality within seconds after launch. Autopilot will report all of the vital characteristics of the image, including automatically detected subjects and faces, and will automate the AI model and settings selection process in various ways.

Photo editing and RAW workflow improvements
Topaz Labs believes there is a quicker and more reliable way to do this heavy lifting for its users while clearly illustrating exactly what is affecting image quality and intelligently applying just the right methods to resolve those issues. Regardless of the type of image file a user is working with—whether it’s a RAW or JPEG—or which

app you use to manage your photos—be it Adobe Lightroom or Capture One—Topaz Photo AI was built to seamlessly fit into any user’s existing post-processing workflow.
To that end, Topaz Photo AI is significantly more well-integrated than the company’s previous image quality apps. From detecting a broader array of host programs to improved RAW workflow capabilities, it will plug into a user’s existing workflow in ways not previously possible. And new integrations are also being added and will continue to be added over time.

Sony manager Nobutatsu Takahashi-san: It’s not impossible to add electronic ND on small Alpha cameras.

CineD:

At IBC 2022, we had the opportunity to talk to Sony’s Nobutatsu Takahashi-san, who is responsible for the Sony Cinema Line of cameras. In this interview, we learn about the underlying philosophy of Sony’s Cinema Line and the approach the company is taking to further empower filmmakers around the world.

A couple of key info:

  • electronic ND filter in small Alpha cameras:
Currently, it is considered impossible to fit both an IBIS system and ND filters of any kind in such a small body, but as Nobutatsu Takahashi-san puts it “nothing is impossible”. With that in mind, there’s at least hope that we can benefit from both, IBIS, AF and e-ND in the future!
  • computational cinematography is a trend that will be impossible for anyone to ignore
  • Presently, the Sony Cinema Line looks like this: FX3, FX6, FX9, then nothing, and then VENICE (VENICE 2). We used to have the F5/F55 as an intermediate. As it is, Sony still sees the possibility for such intermediate cameras, in between workhorses like the FX9 and the very high-end VENICE cameras.
