Dear SAR readers: Do you want a new “Sony A9R” with new High Resolution sensor and bigger body?

We now got a new A7rIII and A7III. And soon Sony will launch the new A7sIII too. But 2018 is also a big Photokina year and both Canon and Nikon will have their new FF mirrorless system cameras on display.

Sony has to take into account this and once more step up the game. The Sony A9r would definitely fulfill this role. These should be the specs based on a general SAR readers sentiment:

  • 60+ Megapixel sensor: Megapixel still do matter to get the best Dynamic Range and Sharpness performance
  • Slightly bigger body for improved handling: People with bigger hands will be happy. Bigger body also balances better with bigger lenses. Bigger body allows improved heat dissipation, faster hardware, improved button layout.
  • Other “minor” improvements could be: dual XQD cards support (very fast!), native 64 ISO support, in camera RAW Pixel Shift mode, Top screen LCD (like the GFX), new camera design (no A7 or A9 alike). Three-axis tiltable LCD like the A99II. Real full touchscreen features like on Panasonic cameras. Third party APP support (through Playmemories).

You might not agree with all those points. But in general let us know:

Would you buy a High resolution Sony A9r for $4,500?

Why is Higher Resolution needed?

First off, 99% of the people does NOT need High resolution images. But there are still arguments in favour of Higher Resolution:

  • Always nice to have the best possible image quality of your work or your best private moments
  • It’s future proof. 8K TV is coming by 202 and we will see even higher resolution screens the years after
  • Cropping: Having High resolution images gives you extreme freedom in post processing.

Jim Kasson recently wrote:

The a7RIII, like the D850, appears to attempt to be an all-around camera. Both the D850 and a7RIII may prove to be smart product management moves for Nikon and Sony. But I really want higher resolution. I realize that the only reasons to want more resolution are to print big and fill 8K monitors (which are thin on the ground at present). So most folks don’t want or need it. But I want to get all a can out of the great lenses we have now, and am delighted when I get an opportunity to make a big print.
