WARNING: No idea if that’s a real thing: Sony A7sIII sensor spec sheet leaked?

People dropped me a ton of messages because that supposedly leaked Sony A7sIII spec sheet was “leaked” on various sites like for example XITEK.

Initially I was nearly sure this is a fake because the spec sheet specifically says the 48MP stills mode is disabled on the “WW271448″ camera. That code has been registered in Asia and refers to the future A7sIII. I really doubted Sony would mention this part on a spec sheet. But than readers pointed me out to the Sony A9 sensor spec sheet which contained the A9 camera code too.

So at the moment I have no clue if this is FAKE or REAL.

If it’s real the camera would be capable of taking 48MP stills but for some reason Sony would not enable this. Please don’t shitstorm on Sony yet because we don’t even know if this spec sheet is real at all :)

Thanks Lukedriftwood!

RUMOR: More info about that new A7sIII cooling system (still weather sealed) and the claimed 15 stops dynamic range (no dual ISO?)

Two sources shared some more info about the A7sIII camera. I thank them both! Disclaimer: The sources are testing prototype cameras. So some features might change or are not reported at all because of this.

Source 1 (first time source so take it with a grain of salt):

The new passive cooling system of the A7SIII will be a little slit on the right side of the camera (where all the ports are) which allows air to get in and out of the camera which allows it the be cooler because the camera isn’t completely sealed. Because it’s a passive cooling system, it will not make any noise or sound so it won’t interrupt audio when recording video. The passive cooling slit on the side has a mesh so the camera will still be weather sealed.
It will not have dual (native) ISO which more expensive cinema cameras have like the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4k. It will, however, have a new sensor that has very fast read/transfer speeds (for the high frame rates (4K 120, 1080p 240).

Source 2:

We are currently shooting a video with the successor to the A7SII the footage out of this tiny beast is incredible we are shooting 4K 120FPS 10BIT 4:2:2 with 15 stops of dynamic range, our tests showing comparable to an Arri Alexa Mini

SAR note: I want to stress that the 15 stops dynamic range is a claim made by Sony marketing (if the rumor is true). Which means real DR might be a bit lower…

Rumored A7sIII specs recap (based on A7sIII protoype cameras)

  • New 12MP sensor with fast readout

  • 600mbps bitrate
  • Base ISO 160 for S-LOG3
  • no Dual ISO
  • Max ISO 409600 (video)
  • 16bit RAW output
  • Sony claims 15 stops dynamic range
  • world’s highest resolution new 9.44 million dot EVF (QXGA resolution)
  • new kind of passive (noise free) cooling system with a mesh on the side to let air in??? (Camera still weather sealed)
  • no overheating, no recording time limits

RUMOR: Sony A7sIII has 15 stops dynamic range, 16bit RAW output and 600mbps bitrate, 160 base ISO with S-LOG3

Three additions to the currently known specs:

600mbps bitrate
16bit RAW output
Sony claims 15 stops dynamic range
iso is still the same as previous a7s2 –  409600
Base ISO for slog 3 is 160 instead of 1600 (As7II) on the pre-production unit.

I keep receiving bits of info from different sources. Not all info may be 100% accurate because most of the sources saw prototypes and maybe they missed some parts or Sony might not have enabled the full features.
Also: I have been told Sony uses a new passive cooling system. But I sill got no confirmation if this means there is no active vent at all (it may be that it has a vent for extreme conditions only?).

RUMOR: Sony A7sIII announcement on July 28/29 and available mid August?

I am still not 100% sure yet but I am getting some early info about a Sony A7sII successor launch event around July 28/29. The camera is rumored to start shipping out in mid August.

RUMOR: And yes folks…of course the As7III has a new fully articulating screen :)

Of course not a surprise but we would have hated it if Sony wouldn’t have done it: The Sony A7sIII will have a fully articulating screen like the one used by the Sony ZV-1.

RUMOR: Sony A7sIII has new 12MP sensor and unlike the Canon EOS-R5 it will be „unlimited“ in recording capabilities!

First of all I can now confirm that obviously the new camera will be named Sony A7sIII. Some speculated it might have a new name or jump a generation from Sony A7II to Sony A7IV. Well it’s not :)

New 12MP sensor:

It is a new 12MP sensor with fast readout. So no fancy global shutter :)

No overheating no recording time limit:

As you see from the official graph on top (thanks Jeff Ratcliffe) the Canon EOS-R5 has two kinds of limits:

  1. Unless you shoot 4k30p: In ideal conditions which means room temperature, no hot days, no sunlight, no artificial light it will stop after 15-30min to avoid overheating.
  2. Recording time is limited to 29m59secs in all modes anyway

The past hours three Sony A7sII successor testers made it clear the Sony A7sII successor will not have such limitations:

“A7sii successor will not have any recording time limits”

No overheating limitations and no default recording time limit of 29m59secs. So if it comes to professional video use the Sony A7sIII will surely outperform the Canon.

RUMOR: Sony A7sII successor records FHD 240fps, 4k120fps 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K120fps raw over HDMI

We got some more info about the A7sII recording capabilities: FHD 240fps, 4k120fps 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K120fps raw over HDMI.

Rumored A7sII successor specs so far:

  • records FHD 240fps, 4k120fps 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K120fps raw over HDMI
  • Looks pretty similar to a Sony A7rIV.
  • world’s highest resolution new 9.44 million dot EVF (QXGA resolution)

So it looks like this camera might not have 8K recording..which makes sense anyway. This camera isn’t a toy (just trolling!) meant to give you limited 8K capabilities. It’s all about top 4K quality video.
