Debunking the next myth: Sony could make super fast FE glass if they wish to do so…

That huge Nikon mount size created a myth on the web: That the Sony E-mount would never allow to make f/0.95 fast autofocus glass because their mount diameter would be too small. I talked to people close to Sony and their answer is that this is pure Bullshit. Sony has no plan yet to launch any f/0,95 FE lens. The simple reason for that is there are still too many gaps in the E-mount lens range to fill before to make such a special lens that only few people would buy. Such a lens would be big and expensive ($3,000 or more).

Seems like the large size of the Nikon mount has more to do with allowing them to eventually use larger than FF sensor. And if Nikon launches a fast lens that’s purely to give us a big “wow” to attract attention on the system. That’s what they need to hide the fact that they have a big lens gap to close. Don”t get fooled by Nikon huge DSLR lens range that can be used with adapters. Those lense are not designed for mirrorless continous autofocus system. They will not work as fast as the new “native” Nikon lenses designed for mirrorless

And by the way, this is the third big myth on E-mount I counted in those 8 years:

The first myth: I remember many years ago people argued that E-mount wouldn’t allow to have Full Frame sensor in it. The discussion only ended once Sony launched the FF VG900 camcorder.

The second myth: This one camera after the Sony A7 launch. It said it would be impossible for Sony to add-on sensor stabilization as the FF sensor barely fitted inside the E-mount. Of course Sony proved them wrong once more with the A7II launch

I guess that my post will absolutely NOT end this discussion. I hope Sony will make a 50mm f/0.95 just to end this third myth sticking around the web :)

Note this is an image of the Leica 50mm f/0,95 (manual focus lens) on the Sony A9:

One more message to Sony: Ah yes, one more thing, please Sony, please consider making a new medium format system too. Preferably with the larger 54x40mm sensor as I think the smaller GFX-X1D sensor size really makes little sense (too close to FF in terms of size with no visible IQ advantage). Dear Sony, make one new “real” medium format system to kill them all :)

Small scale Sony meeting today (there might be no product announcement)

Multiple sources told me Sony has some kind of meeting today. It’s a small-scale event and there might be no product announcement at all. Anyway, if you got some info about that even drop me a message using the anonymous contact box.

That said even if at todays meeting there might be no new product expect the following gear to be announced between Photokina and the New York Photo Plus show:

Sony AsIII with 4k60p and HLG
Sony A6700
Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM

And this is just my pure dreamlist:

Sony 54×40 medium format system camera
Sony A5 entry level Full Frame
Sony 50mm f/0,9 GM just to annoy the Nikon fanboys ;)

(SR5) Sony 24mm f/1.4 FE release scheduled for autumn. 135mm FE coming in 2019.

Image on top shows the Mitakon 135mm f/1.4. The new Sony FE should be f/1.8 or 2.0

I got this info from a reliable source:
sel24f14 is behind schedule from spring to autum. it maybe releaced at photokina
sony will announce sel135 in 2019.i dont know aperture and zeiss or gm.
Both lenses are high on my wishlist. And on yours too?

I will buy the new

Sony has a press conference on August 30 to announce new XPERIA phones…with the stunning 48MP Quad Bayer array?

On August 30 Sony will announce their new XPeria phones. While this is not a news directly related to the Alpha system it will be interesting to see if those new phones will use the new Sony 48 megapixel sensor. GSMarena spotted some hints that indeed that will be the case!

What’s really intriguing about that sensor is that it has a “Qaud Bayer array”. You can switch to 12 megapixel when you need the clean High ISO performance and you can switch back to the full 4(MP resolution when you need to get detailed images. I can seee this feature being implemented on a future Alpha cameras. Imagine having a sort of A9R camera that could give you 96 Megapixel resolution and if needed the High ISO performance of a 24 megapixel camera. Would love to get that!

The full technical 48MP specs and presentation can be read here.

First real world image of the new Nikon FF mirrorless (and attempted size comparison with the Sony A7)

By mistake Nikon leaked these four images of their new Full Frame mirrorless. It shows the huge mount and the big grip of the new camera.

And this is a very rudimental and probably not 100% inaccurate comparison. But a reader sent me this based on the rumored Nikon 3mm larger mount diameter. Not that we learn much from this but the Nikon could (repeat could!) be slightly larger than the A7 series. Also it seems the Nikon has a LCD display on top.

UPDATE: Here are more full size images via MirrorlessRumors.com:

The new Nikon camera will be announced on August 23.

And here we got the first teaser images of the new Nikon Full Frame mirrorless camera…

At last Sony will get a serious competition from Nikon. These images do show the silhouette of the new Nikon Full Frame mirrorless system camera that will be announced in mid August. The camera has the EVF in the middle and a huge mount. I am sure it will not have that “tron” light when it’s out…LOL :)

As Nikon had plenty of time to develop this camera I expect the features to be on par with the Sony series. Also Nikon’s focus in that teaser seems to be on the low light capability of the system. Probably super fast glas will be announced along this camera.
