Fake A5 teaser makes it’s viral way on the web…

This image is having its short viral live on the web. It’s a fake teaser image for a compact interchangeable FF camera. As you can see from the image below this is a photoshopped A6500 with dials. For 5 minutes of glory people would do everything :)

Still I think a very compact and entry level FF camera would be nice to have. So Sony should take note of that FAKE image :)

I got tons of similar images also from RX and other E-mount cameras.

So far all we know is that Sony is going to launch the A7III as next E-mount camera. And there will be also new 135mm and 400mm FE lenses.

Sony China “real” teaser was posted over a month ago. Probably for a new high end compact that has to be announced soon.

(SR4) Sony will announce a new 400mm FE lens in Q3

This is the 100-400mm GM lens. The 400mm FE will be bigger!

Some time I ago I reported about Sony developing a new 400mm lens. I ams still uncertain about the aperture of the lens (f/2.8 or f/4.0). I got some more feedback from sources and it seems the lens is likely to be announced sometimes in Q3 (July-August-September). Some of you might wonder why this lens wasn’t announced along the A9. I have no answer from my sources but my guess is that Sony first wanted to see how the response to the A9 was.

So to recap the lenses we can expect to be announced by Sony:

135mm FE GM: probably f/1.8. No image stabilization but it is weather sealed. To be announced this year.
400mm FE: To be announced in Q3. Weather sealed.

I also got first “hints” about other FE lenses but I am trying to get some specifics before to post them on SAR. But as we rumored earlier this year…2017 will be definitely the year of lenses! While 2018 is rumored to be more of a FE camera lens year too :)

Note: Since October all our lens rumors proved to be correct (Click on the lens name to read the rumor): 100mm STF, budget 85mm, 100-400mm FE, 16-35mm GM. Thanks sources!

Sigma “tech rep” says: “no plans on any A-mount lenses in the future”

Last week Sigma launched the preorder on two new lenses. But these are only available for Canon/Nikon and as a MC-11 kit for Sony E-mount:
24-70mm f/2.8 ART and MC11 bundle at BHphoto.
14mm f/1.8 ART and MC11 bundle at BHphoto.

SAR reader Antoine asked Sigma about their A-mount plans and got as official answer that they have “no plans on any A-mount lenses in the future“.

We should not take this tech rep’s answer as 100% accurate. Some times there are miscommunication issues. Other times they don’t have the full picture. Still it’s worrisome they are sharing such an answer to Alpha mount camera owners:

Ans Sigma’s answer:

The good news is that Sigma will definitely launch their frist native FE autofocus lenses this year. The first lens should be a 35mm f/1.4 ART lens. The second lens is more likely to be a zoom.

Just a dream: Sony 150-600mm lens

An anonymous source created and sent me this image of a Sony 150-600mm A-mount lens. It’s a nice dream but it’s just that…a dream. I have to confess I have not heard of any possible upcoming new A-mount lens from Sony. The focus is clearly on new FF E-mount lenses.

And even if I am wrong and Sony is going to launch some A-mount lens this year than we can safely bet this will be an updated version of current existing lenses to improve the AF performance. UPDATE: I just got this:

One more rumor: Tomorrow Tamron will announce the new 24-70mm f/2.8 lens which will be available for Canon/Nikon only. A Sony A-mount version might be launched in 2018.

Specs comparison: Future Sony A7III versus the soon to be announced Canon 6DII

Sony’s next A7III camera will be announced in October-November. And it will be in the same pricing class of the soon to be announced new 6DmarkII (full specs and images at CanonWatch). So here is the question: Will the A7III trump the 6D mark II? Let’s compare the rumored specs:

  1. Sensor (A7III wins):
The Canon has a 26MP sensor and the A7III will have a new 24MP sensor. I expect the Sony sensor to beat the Canon.
  2. Autofocus (A7III wins):
The Canon has Dual pixel CMOS AF and 45 points cross type AF. The Sony A7III will have a much improved autofocus system. one of the sources even heard that it might have the same A9 AF system. If that’s the case the A7III will win
  3. Burst rate (on par)
6.5fps for the Canon while the A7II should be on par with it (6-7fps)
  4. Video (A7III wins):
1080p for the Canon. Yes, in 2017 Canon is still giving you no 4K on a $2,000 camera! Of course we know the A7III is going to have 4K.
  5. ISO range (on par)
Canon goes up to 102.400. Sony should do the same
  6. Stabilization (A7III wins):
5 axis electronic image stabilization on the Canon. Come one, you know that’s never going to be as good as a hardware stabilization system
  7. Display (probably Canon wins):
Canon has a vari-angle angle screen. I am not sure the A7III will change their current tiltable screen mechanism. If they don’t the Canon will be superior. Also the Touch Panel of the Canon could be superior to the baby-version of the Sony.
  8. Ergonomic (Canon wins):
It’s unclear if the A7III will keep the same A7II design or have the new A9 ergonomic. Any way, the Canon is still more ergonomic.

Any thought on this?

(SR2) 400mm f/4.0 FE lens prototype specs?

400mmfe
To get an idea of the possible size of this lens: Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens vs Sony 70-400mm lens (via CameraSize).

I am 90% certain Sony will launch 400mm FE lens during the second half of the year. But I have yet no reliable info if this is going to be a f/2.8 or f/4.0 lens. So if it’s solid rumors you seek stop reading here.

The only additional specs I got is from a new source. Which means there is a high chance it is not correct. But I figured it would be interesting to hear from SAR readers if such a lens would be appreciated.

The source claims he has seen the 400mm f/4.0 FE prototype:

Market release in Q3 2017
White color with “very elegant design”
aprox. 2,3
kg weight,
fast autofocus
focus
limiter buttobs,
OS in lens
price aprx 4.500 usd

If true the price would be surprisingly low compared to what the Canon EF 400mm costs! But still, this rumor is still not coming from my trusted sources. I hope to hear from them soon.
