Canon is rumored to launch the first Full Frame 8K camera on February 13…and now Sony…where is the A7sIV?

Canonrumors is sure that on February 13 Canon will announce the first EOS-R5 8K camera. Here are he rumored specs (in bold the once that are somehow more reliable):

  • Named the Canon EOS R5
  • 45mp full-frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS
    • 5 stops with IBIS alone
    • 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilization
  • 12fps mechanical, 20fps electronic
  • Scroll wheel added to the back
  • No touch bar
  • Liveview/Movie toggle like previous EOS DSLRs
  • Larger capacity battery, but looks like the LP-E6
  • 8K @ 30fps
  • 4K @ 120fps
  • 4K @ 60fps
  • Built-in 5GHz WiFi
  • New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Announcement ahead of CP+ next month
  • Launching in July 2020 (I’m assuming this means ship date)
  • Announcement on or around February 13, 2020

Now, it’s unclear if that 8K feature works in FF mode, or if it works in crop mode or if it’s more of a “unserious” burst mode feature similar to the one some Panasonic cameras have. If it’s indeed that “burst” modus than you really cannot say it’s a real 8K video camera.

That said, if on February 13 the EOS-R5 will have this 8K recording than Sony will have some trouble. They may have to announce the A7sIV (or A7sIII) at CP+ and not at the NABshow to steal the show to Canon. But lately Sony has been a bit lazy with their releases. Also the Fuji X-T3 reigns unchallenged in the APS-C world :(

I remind you that Sony said the A7sII successor will at least do “4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2″. And it’s rumored it can actually record 4k120p…

WILD RUMOR: 5 years after we might get the new Sony RX1RIII in 2020???

A Zeiss source told us the ZX1 will ship in mid 2020 only. And he said the reason for that are “conflicts with the Sony RX1R III“. He didn’t mention WHAT those conflicts might be but I guess it confirms Sony will launch the new RX1RIII in 2020? It might be that Sony wants to launch it before the Zeiss. I am 99% sure most of the physical Zeiss ZX1 components are made by Sony and this is why they have to coordinate the launch together?

I confess that I have a hard time believing Sony will continue the RX line. The only reason to do so if it would clearly differentiate from the current Sony FE cameras. Which means for example using innovative tech like curved sensor or to test and launch a completely new interface.

What to you think?

Should Sony keep developing the RX1 line?

Possible Sony/Sigma/Tamron product release roadmap speculation: Compact Camera first, telephoto lenses and than A7sIII and A7IV

Based on the rumors let me speculate a possible camera and lens release timing roadmap:

February/March:

  • 100% sure there will be a new compact camera. It’s unclear if this will be a new action camera or the new RX10V or RX1III (article here).
  • 70% likely we might get a new tele photo lens. I heard of a couple of tele lenses that are on the roadmap but I am uncertain which one will come first. Maybe the new 300mm f/2.8 GM? (article here).
  • Sigma might launch the new 70-200mm f/2.8 (80% reliable – article here).
  • I heard about “something bigger” around March. It could be the A7IV but I will try to remain to be conservative and put the A7IV release timing at Photokina just to play SAFE :)

April:

  • There is a fair 70% chance the Sony A7sIII will be announced at the NAB show. The camera will definitely have 4k60p 10bit 4:2:2 (article here).
  • Sony FE C 16-35mm T/3.1 G and two more Cine FE lenses will be announced at the NAB show.

May:

  • Sony promised it will be display the “latest innovations” at Photokina. The Sony A7IV seems like the perfect camera for this although this camera might be announced earlier at CP+. But I got no evidence so far this will be the case and therefore remains my pure speculation. The only wild rumor I got said the A7IV will have a fully articulating screen (article here).
  • I have heard about another “consumer tele” coming this year. I guess it would make sense to launch this lens along the “consumer” A7IV
  • There will be up to six new Tamron FE lenses announced this year. Expect the first ones to be unveiled at Photokina (article here).

June-December:

  • Historically June/July has always been a good time to announce new RX cameras. New RX100 and/or RX10 models might be coming
  • There will be definitely a new wide angle GM lens.
  • Historically October/November have been good months for new FE camera released. So if for some reason the A7IV might not be announced at Photokina it’s likely it will be announced in autumn
  • Expect some current FE lenses to be updated (24-70mm f/2.8 GM for example)
  • Third party: Venus Optics will launch a f/0,95 FE lens, Sigma will launch more FE zooms (tele zooms?). Of course some more Tamron FE lenses (mostly primes)

Surprises?:

  • We didn’t get many surprises from Sony the past couple of years. What would be a surprise for me? Well: Sony A7000 (with EVF in the center), Sony medium format camera (fixed lens), Sony A5 (sub $999 Full Frame with A6000 alike compact styling)
  • Sony said they are considering making f/1.2 fast autofocus lenses. It would make sense for example to make a 50mm f/1.2 GM lens (article here).

While the camera and lenses mentioned in this post are based on rumors the timing is mostly purely speculative. Keep this in mind when I will be wrong on some of my speculations :)  If I get some “timing rumors” I will update this roadmap and mention clearly what is “speculation” and what is “rumor”

This is what Sony said about the future A7sIII: It will have 4k60p and 10bit 4:2:2 and exceed expectations!

I keep reading comments on the web saying Sony might not release the new A7sIII at all. Don’t worry folks it is coming this year! And if you still are worried keep in mind that Sony confirmed this multiple times ( Statement 1, Statement 2, Statement 3).

This is what the A7sIII will be according to Sony:

  • Definitely at least “4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2″
  • Some features will go “beyond the expectations”
  • And “of course more battery power, increased AF accuracy – many things!”

So this is what Sony stated over and over again. The A7sII successor is coming this year and my personal guess is that we might see it at the NABshow in April.

As far as rumors go…

This is the little I got from one reliable source who saw the prototype:

  • The prototype camera recorder 4k120p (and had no 8K recording)
  • The prototype camera was much thicker and had a cooling vent
  • Same kind of A9II improvements (AF, build quality, weather sealing)

So that’s it about the A7sII successor. Now let’s hope Sony really delivers the BIG promise they made!

2020 rumors summary:
– Sony will launch a new wide angle high quality lens (I suspect it will be announced during first half 2020)
– Sony might launch a new 300mm f/2.8 FE GM before the Tokyo Olympics
– Sony has officially registered a new camera code in Asia. It’s for a low end model (Unclear if it’s the RX10V)
– Sony is likely to have a new camera on market in March (I hope it’s the A7IV but got no solid confirmations yet)
– Sigma is going to launch a new 70-200mm f/2.8 FE lens

Rumor ranking explained:
I now post only  two kind of rumors:

RUMOR: Marks rumors that  are somehow more solid and likely to be true
WILD RUMOR: Marks rumor that are from anonymous and first time sources. We post them just for the sake of fun and clickbait of course  :)

RUMOR: Sony has registered a new camera in Asia: It’s a new compact camera (RX, Cybershot or Action camera)

Back in December I reported that Sony registered a new camera in Asia and that it would likely be a new RX model. Well today the same camera code got registered in another Asian agency and this times we can be 100% sure it’s a new Cybershot, RX or action camera because the registration clearly says the camera uses the NP-BX1 battery. This battery is currently used by those cameras:

Cyber-shot:
DSC-RX100
DSC-RX100 II
DSC-RX100 III
DSC-RX100 IV
DSC-RX1
DSC-RX1R
DSC-HX300
DSC-HX50V
DSC-WX300
DSC-HX400V

Action Cam:
FDR-X1000V
HDR-AS200V
HDR-AS100
HDR-AS30V
HDR-AS20
HDR-AS10
HDR-AS15

It’s too early for a new RX100 model and I doubt the RX1 successor is coming. So my bet goes on an action camera…

RUMOR: Sony may release a new 300mm f/2.8 FE GM lens before the Olympics?

front element of the Nikon 300mm f/2.8

The following rumor comes from a known source. He “heard” that Sony is considering to launch a couple of new lenses before the Tokyo Olympics event. One of them may be a new 300mm f/2.8 FE GM.

We can only speculate the price of this new GM to be around $6,000 just like Nikon 300mm f/2.8 and Canon 300mm f/2.8. And it would certainly make sense if Sony released this lens very soon and before the CP+ show if they want sport photographers to get it in time for the Olympics.
