Embody the Contemporary line’s concept of “Pursuing optimum balance”

Achieve the best balance of a lens suited for everyday use

Designed for combination with relatively small full-frame mirrorless cameras, this standard lens pursues easy operability as a regular prime lens by balancing its easy-to-carry size and high optical performance, thereby embodying the Contemporary line’s development concept of “pursuing optimum balance,” and becoming the perfect first lens in the lineup dedicated for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

About Product Name: Product name includes “DG” when the lens is designed to deliver the ultimate in performance on cameras with full-frame sensors, and “DN” when the lens design is optimized for mirrorless cameras with the short flange focal length.

Key features

  1. Newly developed high-performance lens series for full-frame mirrorless cameras

With mirrorless cameras emerging at an accelerated pace, expectations towards lenses suited for high-performance full-frame mirrorless cameras are growing. Unfortunately, many photographers may feel that they have little choices for mirrorless lens systems in terms of performance, size, extensive lineup, and due to the burden of having to use multiple systems. SIGMA has thus developed and proposes this new full-frame mirrorless lens series as the optimal solution to this challenge.

SIGMA will develop interchangeable lenses with unprecedented specifications and performance by designs that benefit from the short flange focal length feature of mirrorless cameras while retaining the concepts of “Contemporary,” “Art,” and “Sports.” We will announce three models as the first lenses from this series.

  • 45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary

Compact size is realized while maintaining high image quality and is compatible with full-frame mirrorless cameras. This prime lens refines the concept of the Contemporary line.

  • 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art

The world’s first* 35mm F1.2 as L-Mount and Sony E-mount lens for full-frame mirrorless system. The high image quality of the Art line that pursues ultimate performance is realized by F1.2 maximum aperture.

* As an autofocus lens

  • 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN | Art

Large-diameter, ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

While pursuing the ultimate image quality of the Art line, the size is reduced thanks to the exclusive design for mirrorless cameras.

  1. Beautiful bokeh and rendering that can be enjoyed in every scene

With the SIGMA 45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary, bokeh expressions are especially featured. Spherical aberration has been controlled to ensure not only the large bokeh in the front and rear of the subject but also the rear bokeh near the area in focus create a gradient to a soft blur. This lens softens the periphery of blurred images suppressing the double-line bokeh etc. and enhances the three-dimensional impression of the subject with the smooth expressions in the foreground and the background. In addition, its minimum focusing distance of 24cm makes it possible to enjoy shooting snapshots and tabletop photos taking advantage of the angle of view. The design gives consideration to vignetting to achieve beautiful round bokeh and subdue swirly bokeh in the whole bokeh effects.

While this lens produces smooth bokeh effects of which one could say as “classical expression” when the aperture is wide open, it also realizes modern sharp rendering when it is stopped down. It is reassuring to hold this lens as the regular lens for everyday use.

  1. High-speed and highly accurate AF enabled by the stepping motor
The lens is capable of smooth, quiet and high-speed AF made possible by a stepping motor, as well as supports Face/Eye Detection AF and video AF. The design gives consideration to MF operations, and a ring of appropriate torque provides good operability.
  2. High build quality and outstanding operability

Because this lens is intended for everyday use, particular attention has been given to build quality and operability. The bayonet hood feels comfortable when removing and attaching, and the lens barrel incorporating metal material as the main part achieves improved durability. Furthermore, thanks to the aperture ring with the right click feeling, comfortable operability during various shooting styles is ensured.

I made an attempt to make a size comparison between the new Sigma 35mm f/1.2 lens and other FE lenses. The leaked image actually shows the L-mount version. That’s why I matched the size the “A” logo between the leaked image and the current Sigma 35mm f/1.4 FE. It’s not 100% accurate but it should be very close…

What’s clear is that the new f/1.2 lens is both longer and wider than current FE lenses. You cannot cheat on physics :)

Next we have the size comparison between the Sony 16-35mm GM, the new Sigma 14-24mm FE (L-mount version on this image) and the Tamron 17-28mm FE:

Sony Boosts Full-Frame Lens Line-up with Introduction of 35mm F1.8, Lightweight Prime

Sony today announced the latest addition to its E-mount full-frame lens line-up with the introduction of a FE 35mm F1.8 large-aperture wide-angle prime lens, model SEL35F18F.

The compact dimensions and light weight of this full-frame, large-aperture prime lens provide mobility and convenience for shooting a wide range of subjects from everyday snapshots, food photography, landscapes, night scenes and more. The new lens provides outstanding corner-to-corner image quality from a maximum F1.8 aperture and its quiet autofocus and tenacious tracking performance make it a great choice for both stills and movie shooting. Its small size mean it is equally suited to APS-C as well as full-frame bodies, offering a 52.5mm equivalent[i] focal length that is perfect for snapshots, portraits and more.

Product Highlights:

High resolution and large-aperture full-frame performance in compact and lightweight lens

  • Large F1.8 maximum aperture, weighing in at just 280 grams and measuring 65.6 mm (diameter) by 73.0mm (length); this new lens sets a new standard for portability.
  • Smart optical construction including an aspherical element to suppress aberration and deliver high resolution throughout the entire image frame. 9-blade circular aperture enables beautiful bokeh.
  • Minimum focus distance of 0.22m and maximum magnification of 0.24x offer easy access to the world of close-up photography.

Versatile control and handling for a wide range of imaging needs

  • Conveniently placed, customisable focus hold button and a focus mode switch for instantaneous switching between auto and manual focus.
  • Linear Response Manual Focus for fine, responsive manual focus control.
  • Dust and moisture resistant design[ii] add to the versatility and reliability of this new lens and invoke a feeling of confidence in the user.

Quiet AF with excellent tracking for movies as well as stills

  • Fast, precise and quiet linear-motor AF drive system for precise focus for both stills and movies where “wobbling” is employed for delicate continuous focus control.

“A 35mm prime lens is a go-to lens for so many photographers as its versatility means that it is the right choice for so many different kinds of shot,” said Yann Salmon-Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing for Digital Imaging, Sony Europe. “Our new 35mm FE lens combines brilliant corner to corner clarity with a truly lightweight design and we are confident that it will appeal to a wide range of stills and movie shooters.”

POLL:
The PROS of this lens seems to be the great IQ (see image samples) and features (focus switch and hold button). But the price is quite high. So here is the question:
