The USA preorders are now officially open and the lens is expected to start shipping out on September 28:
400mm f/2.8 FE at BHphoto, Adorama, Amazon, FocusCamera. In EU at Calumet.de and ParkCamera.

I am curious to see how many preorders Sony will have on this lens. I really have no ide if it’s ZERO, TEN or more. I think the price is justified by the specs and new tech inside. But I don’t know how many sports photographers are really going to make the switch now. So here is the poll:

A SAR reader told me that the “SKU” of the new Zeiss Batis 40mm f/2.0 lens is already available. The lens will be announced in July-August and ship in October.

Zeiss 40mm Batis specs:

With focus limiter (Full / ∞ ~ 0.4 m / 0.5 m to 0.24 m)
Filter diameter is 67 mm
Batis Size close to 85mm (40mm is slightly smaller)

First Sony 400mm FE size comparisons

CameraSize added the new Sony 400mm FE lens in their database. On top you can see the new Sony vs the Canon. They don’t have the Nikon 400mm in their database so the best I can give you is this screenshot from Matt Grangers comparison:

The Sony is the shortest of the three by a small amount. But the real advantage is the lower weight and the better weight distribution. And than of course the faster in lens linear focusing mechanism.
