Sigma CEO says the first Full Frame designed lenses for mirrorless will arrive in 2019

Share

Lensvid had an interesting talk with Sigma CEO Yamaki. And there are some things that could be of interest for us:

  • Next year Sigma will start making dedicated Full Frame mirrorless lenses (SAR note: I am 99% certain these lenses will be available for both L-mount and E-mount).
  • These new lenses will be smaller but not by much. Mr. Kazuto Yamaki gives an example of Sony’s 35mm FF lens vs. their own DSLR lens with an adaptor and explains that making the lenses significantly smaller might not always be possible even if they are designed for mirrorless cameras from the ground up.
  • Making tilt-shift lenses for mirrorless cameras is not a priority for Sigma
  • Sigma always tries to make its lenses smaller and lighter but at least in the art series, it prefers optical performance over size/weight as opposed to the contemporary series which is more balanced.
  • Sigma is interested in Phase Fresnel but this doesn’t mean that we will see any lens based on this technology (which Nikon and to some extent Canon) employed.
  • Mr. Kazuto Yamaki agrees that we are at the start of a new area in Photography, one that signifies the move from DSLR to mirrorless cameras. He also mentioned that he believes this is part of a process of change that has been going on for a long time and has been happening every 20-30 years. The last time was the move from analog to digital, before that we had the move from manual focus to autofocus and even before that the move from rangefinder to DSLR cameras.
  • Mr. Kazuto Yamaki predicts that we will see more mirrorless sales than DSLRs in about 3 years. However, DSLR lens sales will probably still be higher (as there will still be many more DSLRs around compared to mirrorless cameras).

Aaron contacted me to share his A9 review:

Award-winning Professional wildlife photographer Aaron Baggenstos travelled to Alaska to photograph the incredible biodiversity of birds and wildlife that teem there. For the first time Baggenstos left his Nikon D5 at home, instead carrying Sony’s a9 flagship mirrorless camera. In the video below, Baggenstos details his findings highlighting his favorite features and critiques, all while showcasing stunning images from his encounters with giant brown bears, fox, puffins, eagles, and a grand variety of Alaskan wildlife.

Sony confirms at Dpreview new A7s and new APS-C E-mount cameras are coming

Share

Dpreview interviewed Kenji Tanaka, VP and Senior General Manager of Sony’s Business Unit. Here are some info:

1) Sony knew about the competition FF mirrorless plan. Tanaka said “I already predicted that Canon and Nikon would join the market, and even Panasonic. It wasn’t a surprise to me.

2) About going Medium format:Right now there are a lot of things still to do with full-frame sensors, so at the moment I don’t have any ideas about starting work on new larger imaging sensors.

3) APS-C lenses: Sony plans to make small size lenses too. And they also plan to make new APS-C lenses.

4) APS-C cameras:The APS-C market is very important for us, so we will create new models in the APS-C market, but we need to ask customers what kind of models they want.” And interesting: “APS-C cameras for professional use must exist.“.

5) Weathersealing: Sony is working to improve it.

6) Sony SD cards choice:Right now, processing speed is slower than SD UHS-II, so using SD is OK. But in the future, for example in any camera with 8K/30p video, SD won’t be enough.

7) About the Sony A7sIII:The next model should of course be more than they expect. So we’re planning a future S model right now, but it will take time.” Sony also knows that their customers want “4K/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit, and of course more battery power, increased AF accuracy – many things!

8) About the new Sony AI strategy:Currently we’re planning upgrades to existing models, and of course future models that will contain new AI features.

To sum up:
Sony confirmed our rumors about a professional APS-C camera are spot on!
Sony A7sIII will meet the requests of the customers and even “exceed” them
New APS-C lenses coming…hurray!
The new artificial features like “Animal Eye-AF” are going to be implemented on current cameras too.
