Canon to use Sony sensors on their future DSLR cameras?

Share

Canonwatch reports:

“I hear that Canon is considering to sell off its sensor fab and acquire from other manufacturers the sensors of its future cameras. Furthermore, I learn that an EOS camera currently in testing is being tested with two different sensors, one made by Canon and the other one made by another sensor manufacturer.”

It’s quite obvious that if the rumor is true that this means Canon is testing Sony sensors. But I don’t think it would make sense for Canon to switch to Sony sensors. They would always get the best sensors a long time after Sony’s own camera implementations.

(SR5) Sony announcement next week (around November 5th).

Share

For the third time in row this year Sony is having a product launch AFTER a big show. I have been told Sony will have a products launch press event next week around November 5th. I say “around” because I don’t know in which time zone the source is and it may well be a day earlier or later in other time zones.

For sure there will be the new Sony A68 A-mount camera. And note that Sony FE lens roadmap says a “large aperture prime” lens should be due in autumn. Let’s hope there is no delay on that one!

Sony shows new videos of the Starvis (super low light) and Pregius (global shutter) sensors .

Starvis Sony sensors can see in nearly dark conditions!

Sony posted two new videos showing two new sensor tech. For now both sensors are made for a main use in the security camera business. But the sensors features might find some of it on future digital cameras too. Here is the official sensor description:

Pregius sensor:The Pregius is global shutter pixel technology for active pixel-type CMOS image sensors that use Sony’s low-noise CCD structure, and realizes high picture quality.” (Source: Sony).

Starvis sensor:The STARVIS is back-illuminated pixel technology used in CMOS image sensors for surveillance camera applications. It features a sensitivity of 2000 mV or more per 1 µm2 (color product, when imaging with a 706 cd/m2 light source, F5.6 in 1 s accumulation equivalent), and realizes high picture quality in the visible-light and near infrared light regions.” (Source: Sony).

And here are two videos:

“STARVIS” : Sony CMOS image sensor technology for security

“Pregius” : Sony CMOS image sensor, Global Shutter Technology
