New A7II review at CameraLabs: “has become my favourite in the full-frame Alpha mirrorless series”

The Pros and Cons list about the A7II.

Gordon from CameraLabs (Click here) posted his full A7II review and writes:

I can tell you this though: when the choice was between the A7 and the A7r, I’d have gone for the latter as the former failed to deliver significant benefits in handling. But now with the improved grip, better AF and stabilised sensor, the A7 Mark II has become a much more usable camera, and one I much preferred using to either the A7 or A7r, even with the latter’s extra resolution. Indeed since I’m not a pro video shooter the A7 Mark II has become my favourite in the full-frame Alpha mirrorless series and a model I can easily recommend even with the caveats mentioned above.
I can’t however imagine this will be the only full-frame mirrorless camera from Sony this year, so once again if video or ultra high resolution stills are your priorities, I’d either wait for a new model or snap up one of the originals. It’s also worth mentioning the original A7, which despite being first generation, currently represents great value if you simply want the most affordable entry to full-frame mirrorless photography.

Canon-Sony partnership on new 50MP sensor?

Share

Steve from CanonWatch reports about a possible “unexpected” partnership between Sony and Canon:

In other words, and according to the source, Canon and Sony will agree on a patent exchange to produce a 53MP sensor for Canon’s upcoming high resolution DSLRs. This sensor would keep the Exmor technology, and feature Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF. The best of both worlds someone may say. Sony would still sell sensors to Nikon, but without the Dual Pixel AF (it is for sure not a problem for Sony to mass-produce slightly different lines of sensors).

I havent heard about such a partnership from my sources. But I think that this partnership would certainly make sense for both manufacturers to save some costs. Something necessary if you know the system camera market is shrinking dramatically (Source: Cipa on 43rumors).

What’s coming at CP+ in two weeks so far: Many FE lenses, some A-mount lens. Camera release date unsure.

sony_20141120_012

Time to make a clear roundup of the CP+ rumors. The show will start on February 12 and the Sony press conference is scheduled for February 13. There is some smoke and some fire on the rumors front:

The Fire:

So far we only know for sure that four FE lenses (Zeiss 35mm f/1.4, Sony 28mm f/2.0 G, 90mm f/2.8 G OSS macro, 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS) and two converters will be announced.
It’s also highly likely that
1) Sony will show an updated FE roadmap
2) Sony will give us more hints and show a mockup of the two “updated” A-mount lenses (image on top)

The smoke:
So far I got no 100% confirmation from trusted sources about a camera announcement at CP+. They spilled out some info on the A7000, A7rII and so on but always stressed me to say that announcement date is unclear. Knowing the recent Sony history it may be possible that Sony will focus on the FE lens announcement at CP+ and announce the cameras 1-2 months later just like it happened at Photokina and with the A7II.
1) There is a cat and mouse game with Canon on the High megapixel camera. So maybe Sony wants to see what Canon brings out first…
2) New 4K cameras may be announced at NAB in April. A show that suits better for that kind of tech.
3) I got absolutely ZERO rumors about possible new A-mount cameras coming at CP+….

So let’s hope that Sony is just hiding their cards like they did with the A7s and A7II…we want the A7rII and A7000 as soon as it gets Sony! :)
