And they compared the performance with the Sony-Zeiss Planar lens ($1,500 here at Amazon), Nikkor 58mm lens ($1,700) and more important the Zeiss Otus ($4,000 here at BHphoto).

Sony 18 105 Pillow OSS F4 Zoom

Clearly, as this lens is aimed at video shooters, some of the optical issues may not be a concern for people recording moving images with this lens on an NEX camera. In fact, it is very good for this job.
Those shooting stills may be wary of the poor performance towards the edges of the frame at the telephoto end of the zoom, and the wild distortion that is present, as well as the high levels of fringing present. These issues make the lens difficult to recommend to those who may shoot stills with this lens.

As a photog it was the constant aperture and zoom length which draw me to this lens. From what I have seen until now it could be a good travel lens or even used for portraits.

Kai from Digitalrev tried to answer one simple question. Can the first mirrorless FF (aka Sony A7) match the quality and performance of the Canon 5D Mark III? The question is tricky also because these are inherently different cameras. An A7-A7r for example can use a huge amount of third party lenses you cannot use on a Canon. On the other side the Canon has a more reliable faster autofocus for example.

I think the next generation Sony FF E-mount cameras will close some of the gaps they still have compared to Canon/Nikon DSLR. The Sony A6000 for example proves us that a terrific AF can be done on mirrorless camera. It’s only a matter of a (short) time now until FF E-mount will match or even outperform a classic DSLR camera performance.
