New A99 and NEX-6 readers mail and links and unboxing roundup!
“BLOODY HELL 2″ – Sony a99 Review – Does it Suck?
I am getting many emails from SAR readers getting their NEX-6 and A99 cameras. I wish you all a nice unboxing experience
Here is a roundup of links I got from them:
A99:
Our friend Dulaney sent us this text: “The cover article in November’s issue of Popular Photography is titled, on the cover: “The Future of Camera Tech?: Hands-On Report: Sony’s New Alpha 99.” It is entirely unusual for a “hands-on report,” as opposed to a full review, to get cover treatment like this–especially when an important camera like the Canon 1DX is fully reviewed in the same issue. And Po Photo writes about the A99: “We think it is going to change the landscape for mid-priced camera bodies.” Some image samples can be seen at popphoto.com. A99 unboxing by Davide on Flickr and by Roderick at Rodkar. You even get a free T-shirt with the A99 (see facebook). In Stock now at Jessops.
NEX-6 and lenses:
A first surprise was that for a short moment Sonystore Canada had the NEX-6 with ancake zoom kit lens in Stock. NEX-6 image samples on Flickr. Unpacking in Amsterdam. NEX-5 vs NEX-6 AF comparison on youtube. Sony E 10-18mm f / 4 OSS, E 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS E 35mm f/1.8 OSS & E 30mm f/3.5 Macro – sample photos at Fotopolis. In Stock in UK at Cardiffcenter eBay (and here with kit lens -> via Slidoo.com).

7 months ago |Haha, love it.
Maybe it also could have been Pot Photo. A magazine dedicated to marijuana.
A substance I’m sure well known to some of the regular contributors on SAR.

7 months ago |No! The waiting is killing me. I had it preordered from Adorama day 1.

7 months ago |I posted my daily routing this week on Dyxum. In short, I go to all of the retail websites, check for expected date changes, then I check my e-mail, credit card, and the order details for any changes. My behavior has gotten worse since reports of people receiving theirs in Asia, Europe, and even Canada have started to emerge. I am a little ashamed of myself, frankly. It will be here when it will be here.

7 months ago |Well I am not quite that bad, I just check my email every 15 minutes for any shipping info and my adorama sales status every hour. I should be checking both right about…damn still not sent, what was I saying? Oh yeah, I feel no shame. I hope you get your 99 soon, just sometime after me.

7 months ago |Switch your order to B&H. They’re shipping 2 weeks before Adorama (whom I also called today). Plus, B&H will meet the Adorama online package that includes the case and memory card.

7 months ago |The guy in the video says he likes EVF better than OVF “yes, it’s that good”. I guess that because of these words he’ll be filled with tomatoes and vegetables by all the nay sayers and film lovers out there. LOL!!

7 months ago |To Fellow Canadian,
Not just that Sony Store Canada (sonystyle.ca) has the NEX-6 with pancake zoom kit in stock, there is also a coupon code “VIPSAVE2012″ which gives:
25$ off 200$
50$ off 500$
100$ off 1500$
Enjoy!

7 months ago |Nice thoughts on the A99.
He made a few points.
Great image stabilization. For every lens. That’s got to give the competition headaches.
If you come to think of it, it is a great thing for video(a must have) and absolutely fabulous for low light handheld shooting. It does give you the freedom to venture to shutter speeds that would make the next guy shooting a Canikon without the proper stabilized lens jealous.
This brings me to the next thing, being able to see through the EVF, means that you have a greater chance to grab the shot, to nail the scene right away, fast and certain that you retain the right exposure and white balance in order to keep the image as you initially wanted it to look like.
You don’t have to redo it after changing the settings, you change the settings during, so that’s a big plus.
One other thing..focusing!!! Another big plus, focus peaking!! Not to mention that coupled with the 24-70 which I do know by heart, means that you get all focusing points on the sensor to assist the main 19. The speed of the camera’s focusing with the speed of the lens will be a dream.
And there’s something else. I downloaded some RAW samples and played them through LIGHTROOM 4. I noticed that I applied about one third, anyway, less then a half noise reduction for 3200 ISO shots taken with the A99 compared to the A900′s 1600 shots.
And the detail, color and dynamic range of the A99′s 3200 ISO shots do tell an even nicer story than the A900′s 1600 ISO.
So there’s a lot to like(love) about the A99…minus the battery life..:P
Standard hotshoe…clean HDMI output..silent control wheel.
So the next letter goes like this… “Dear Santa, …”

7 months ago |B&H today says a99 possibly arriving today from Sony, to be shipped starting ASAP thereafter. They said they have enough coming in to cover their entire catalog of backorders, so there will be no waiting for anybody who’s made a preorder.

7 months ago |Would love to hear from any folks with NEX6 on how it does with recording high resolution video (1080/50p) for extended periods of time – and whether the notorious NEX overheating issues is resolved (the manual still refers to this). Thanks!

7 months ago |Here’s a post from someone in the UK that already got their NEX-6…
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50124217
“…it reached the maximum recording time of 29.59mins, at which it shut off due to the Eu recording tax laws, not because of overheating. The test was done inside in an office environment, so it was warm but not hot in here. I imagine it would be just fine outside in normal temps.”
They had a couple other notes about the video, but I don’t want to copy/paste the whole post here.

Sony have said I will get ‘substantial compensation’. A Zeiss 24-70 would be very nice

7 months ago |I see great potential in this camera;the A99. It is however…not a jedi yet. I will wait for the A99 mark 2 or A99 mark 3. That will be the camera, especially with the addition of h.265 HEVC. Sony needs to work on this camera’s dynamic range. The midtones have a crude disappointing look to them. The mids need to open up with more clarity and sharpness, further the blacks are pretty murky. This is a nice camera but I’m not blown away. Next time though…

7 months ago |@Video: “STANDARD HOTSHOE” – one that doesn’t offer full compatibility with ANYTHING but 2, yes: TWO flashes. It’s not standard hotshoe. It’s new properitaly hot shoe, only this time: Instead of Minolta properitaly hot shoe supporting flashes ever since 1988 we have Sony’s new properitaly hot shoe supporting 2 flashes released in 2012.
These screams of joy by clueless people are ridiculous.

7 months ago |Ironic how the crap YouTube videos piss off this guy. Why can’t reviewers just start with a review instead of a long-winded intro? Other than that, he’s a good review but annoying.
