Sony officially teases the new FX6 E-mount camcorder!

Back in March I reported first about this camera. And now it’s official! Sony is teasing the FX6 on their Cinema Line page. Sony has not announced the specs yet…

This is the teaser video of their entire FX line including the new FX6:

This is the press text that only shortly mentions the FX6:

Sony today announced the launch of Cinema Line, a series of new camera products for content creators which will bring together Sony’s expertise in image quality, attention to detail, technology and passion in digital cinema.

Cinema Line will deliver not only the coveted cinematographic look cultivated through extensive experience in digital cinema production, but also the enhanced operability and reliability that meet discerning creators’ various needs. The new series will extend beyond basic cinema camera and professional camcorder form factors.

In 2000, Sony released the ground-breaking HDW-F900. The HDW-F900 marked the beginning of digital cinema history as the world’s first 24p digital cinema camera. VENICE and other products followed in response to countless dialogues with cinematographers and image creators.SAR

Existing products in the Sony range will form part of the Cinema Line including VENICE and FX9. VENICE has become a first choice for digital movie production, and the FX9 has an outstanding track record in documentary production. The next step is a new model that will appeal to a wide spectrum of visual creators. Sony will be releasing and shipping this next addition to the range, the FX6 camera by the end of 2020.

Each of the Cinema Line cameras will evolve with user feedback: The FX9 Version 3 upgrade, available in 2021, will see the addition of the S700PTP* allowing Remote Control of Sony’s camera, a Center Scan mode for Super 16mm lens and B4 Lens support with its adaptor as well as other features. In parallel, as of November 2020, the VENICE camera will see a couple of additional features in its V6.0 version which will improve its operability in broadcast and live environments.

“At Sony, we celebrate and have the deepest respect for filmmakers, cinematographers, and storytellers. With Cinema Line, we’re tapping into our DNA from both the film industry and digital imaging prosumer market and combining it to develop new creative tools. This line of products will enable creators to push their creative boundaries further and capture the emotion in each and every frame.” says Claus Pfeifer, Head of Connected Content Acquisition, Media Solutions, Sony Professional Europe.

Sony officially announces the new LA-EA5 adapter!

Today Sony announced the new LA-EA5 adapter. And this may the last A-mount product ever announced by Sony :(

Explora writes:

Improved from previous models is the focal plane phase-detection AF, as well as the ability to shoot continuously at high speed with AF/AE tracking, up to 11 frames per second, as well as use sophisticated Real-Time Eye AF and Real-Time Tracking modes with a variety of lens and camera types. This focusing performance is available on SSM, SAM, and even AF lenses that lack an internal focusing motor, such as the Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA or Sonnar T* 135mm f/1.8 ZA, and, if using an a7R IV or a6600, AF and AE tracking is supported with these motorless lenses. The adapter also has a sleeker cylindrical design to fit mirrorless bodies better, with an attached vertical grip.

Hands-on:

Sony interview at Business Insider: The focus now is on video and on smartphone+alpha integration

Business Insider Japan interviewed Shigeki Ishizuka, Representative Director and CEO of Sony Electronics (left), and Ichiro Takagi, Executive Vice President and COO of Sony Electronics.

  • Coronavirus did impact camera sales. But Sony expects sales to recover quickly after Q2
  • The digital camera market is a tough market because it’s shrinking. That’s why the “Alpha brand” will focus on “video” too, to secure a certain scale.
  • The MAC version for the just released Imaging Edge Webcam software will be released in “fall of 2020”
  • Sony also said that they aim for a complete fusion of how to integrate the smartphone and camera. Sony is the only company in the world that has a full-fledged smartphone and camera business. Sony plans to significantly increase development investment in smartphone business and solutions for cameras and professionals, and strengthen the development in the short and long term.

I guess this blends perfectly with what Sony wants to achieve with the soon to be announced new “Sony A7c”: This camera is aimed for vloggers and travelers, the camera is light, compact, has a selfie screen and the new more simple Sony A7sIII menu. At the same time their new Xperia models will use all the classic Alpha features like high frame rate and eye af.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 is now in Stock in the USA at FocusCamera. New reviews from CameraLabs and SonyAlphaBlog: “superlative lens”

The new lens is now in Stock at FocusCamera. Preordered items are also shipping out at BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama, FocusCamera. In Europe at Calumet DE, Amazon DE, Amazon UK.

Marc Alhadeff from SonyAlphaBlog tested the new Sigma and concluded:

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 (1099 euros) is a superlative lens in all domains: optical performances, artistic rendering , AF performance, ergonomics , build quality but also size and weight and price. It easily takes the first place among all the 85mm for Sony E mount
It is the ultimate 85mm lens in term of quality for a Sony A7RIV with its 61Mpix for portraits & weddings. A must have!

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs also tested the lens:

It’s an excellent example of what you can achieve when designing a new 85mm f1.4 lens from the ground-up for mirrorless cameras: not only is the 85mm f1.4 DG DN smaller and half the weight of the earlier 85mm f1.4 DG HSM but Sigma’s also improved optical performance over what was already a very respectable lens. This makes the newer DG DN version optically the best 85mm f1.4 lens I’ve tested so far. Packed with all the right features and coming at a price that’s one third less than the Sony FE 85mm f1.4 G-Master, the Sigma clearly earns a Highly Recommended!
