RUMOR: Sony 12-24 f/2.8 GM lens announcement will be delayed. And lens price will be around $4,000!

Image on top shows the current Sigma 14-24mm FE

The same source whom correctly shared our first exclusive 20mm f/1.8 FE lens rumor also shared new details on the future Sony 12-24 f/2.8 GM lens:

1224GM announcement delayed by the Coronavirus outbreak.
the price could be around 4000$ !
lens can be equipped rear filter, maybe like 400/2.8.

The 12-24mm GM lens was previously rumored to be announced in Q2. I guess it’s no surprise the Covid19 outbreak will delay the launch of this lens.

What’s impressive is the high price tag! $4,000 for a wide angle lens is a lot. But from what I heard this is a superb quality lens and surely the fact that it might have the same 400mm GM rear filter system makes it clear this lens is made for landscape PRO photographers.

Rumor ranking explained:
I now post only  two kind of rumors:

RUMOR: Marks rumors that  are somehow more solid and likely to be true
WILD RUMOR: Marks rumor that are from anonymous and first time sources. We post them just for the sake of fun and clickbait of course  :)

Note: Please hold me accountable for the “RUMOR” and not for “WILD RUMOR”  :)

WILD RUMOR: Possible Sony PXW-FX6 specs…

Sony will showcase three new Cine E-mount lenses including the 16-35mm T/3.1 FE Cine lens (in the center of the image)

Sony just announced they will have a press conference on April 20.

There is little chance they will unveil the A7sII successor. At best e can hope to get a teaser or development announcement.
But there might be a chance to get a new Sony PXW-FX6. There are the bits of rumors I got on this E-mount camcorder:

Sony PXW-FX6 is the successor to the hugely popular PXW-FS5. The new full frame PXW-FX6 follows the design from PXW-FS5 with a light weight camera body and at the same time gets a thing or two from the PXW-FX9. The body color will be the same as FX9 and they will share the same sensor.

The new FX6 will record up to 3840×2160 at 30fps and in 1920×1080 up to 120fps. Recording media is SDXC and 10-bit 4:2:2 LongGOP XAVC-L codec. As the same sensor as the FX9 is used the hybrid auto focus system will be the same. Raw output for 3840×2160 up to 60fps is provided from the SDI output.
Both S-Cinetone and S-log3 as recording gamma options are included but there’s no real LUT support but a simple view assist.

The camera body will be updated with better weather sealing and both the rear EVF and LCD screen will have a boost in resolution. Also the mount and frame is more robust to handle heavier full frame lenses.

Sony will also announce the original PXW-FS7 to become discontinued later during this year and the FS7 II will see a price drop in the fall.

Pricing is set to around $7000 and available late summer 2020.

Still I hope Sony will at least gives us a clear answer of when they plan to announce the A7sIII. Form what I heard we can expect the new camera to be on market by September/October…

RUMOR: Sony A7IV coming this year and Sony A7rIV low resolution shooting mode in the works?

A source shared some tidbits about Sony and Zeiss:

About Sony he said:

Sony representatives mentioned that we should expect the a7IV later this year and NOT at the CP+
A different Sony representative mentioned that they are actively working on allowing a7RIV shooters to shoot at lower MegaPixels. He mentioned that it’s been one of the highest requests, so they’re working on it.

About Zeiss he said:

Zeiss expects their ZX1 camera early summer or late spring. They also might consider developing more lenses for E-mount, but they still considered the 40 to be new, so not sure about that.

.

What’s next from Sony?

Difficult times for all companies because of the near production stop in China

Three weeks ago SAR told you as first that Sony would announce a fast wide angle prime lens in late February. And indeed this underwhelming rumor turned out to be true. I really was hoping to get at least the compact camera that Sony registered back in December. But nope :(

But let’s get over the disappointment and focus on what’s coming next. Here is the recap:

  1. Sony registered a new fixed lens camera in December. Announcement should come any time soon if Coronavirus didn’t mess up with the roadmap.
  2. 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens should be announced around Photokina time too.
  3. Both the A7IV and A7sII successor are DEFINITELY planed to be released this year. But all depends obviously on how fast China will solve the production issues (Note: Sony produces the camera in Thailand but many parts are imported from China). The A7sII successor should be on market by September 2020.
  4. More lenses are coming, most likely telephoto GM.

Stay tuned folks!

Kai and Lok list the 13 Upgrades They Should Make for the A7sIII

Kai and Lok do list the 13 Upgrades They Should Make for the A7sIII.

I remind you that this is what the A7sIII will be according to Sony:

  • Definitely at least “4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2″
  • Some features will go “beyond the expectations”
  • And “of course more battery power, increased AF accuracy – many things!”

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 price shows up in Europe: 1149€ ???

A French store is now showing the price of the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 FE lens. I am not 100% certain if that’s the right and final price but I have been “hinted” it’s quite close :)
If confirmed this means it costs less than half the price of the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 which sells for 2450€ at Amazon Germany!

Let's assume the Tamron price is really 1149€ (could be $1199 or $1299 in USA). Would you buy the lens?

WILD RUMOR: New Sony RX100 rumored to feature a new wider 20-200mm wide angle lens?

UPDATED: Three different anonymous sources sent me this:

Source 1:

Sony will announce a new RX100 before the olympic games.
The sensor stays the same 20MP sensor
The major upgrade is in the Lens. It will feature a new 10x zoom lens of 7.4-75mm
Other minor improvements include:
The external connections will be unified to USB C
The internal flash is replaced by a hot shoe
Revised controls with one additional button

Source 2:

I wanted to share that Sony developed a new wider angle lenses for large sensor compact cameras. It will start at 16mm or 20mm (6 / 7.5mm real focal distance).
I am not sure if this will be for a new product or an overhaul for the RX0, Rx10 or RX100.

Source 3:

The case will see the first major case redesign in years.
The built in Flash is removed, but a new flash box (as big as a matchbox) powered by the camera will be introduced.
Also a new grip/tripod with a spare battery will be introduced along the camera
The camera will have the newest AF modes
it will record 4k60 for 5min.
USB C is accompanied by Mic and Headphone jack
Introduction of a new live streaming mode via WLAN
New built in beauty mode also in video
One additional button on the back and one on the top

There are actually two versions of the lens designed. A 20-200mm f2.8 and a 16-50mm f1.4.
Now the sad news: Because of the corona outbreak production that was supposed to start in Jan/Feb is delayed for at least for months.

Please note that I marked this rumor as “WILD” which means no trusted source has yet confirmed it. So take it with a big grain of salt. If you can confirm or deny this rumor please drop me a message using this anonymous contact form or by contacting me at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com.
