Innovative Sony multilayer sensor patent shows how to get rid of corner issues.

The short E-mount flange distance has one “drawback”. Lenses have to be larger to correct the incident angle at the corner which usually causes heavy color shifting, huge vignetting and loss of sharpness. That’s why Voigtlander redesigned the [shoplink 34831 ebay]Heliar 15mm III lens (here on eBay)[/shoplink]. And the new design makes the new lenses twice as big as the predecessor.

Sony seems to have acknowledged that there is an issue to be solved. Egami spotted a new Sony sensor which packs a couple of innovations. First of all this is a multilayered sensor (and not a classic RGB Bayer). And the second innovation is that there is a lens on the sensor that corrects the angle of the light hitting the sensor. With that solution the light hits the full sensor with the right angle. It would allow lenses to be more compact because they don’t have to uses more glass to correct the angle.

On paper it would also allow all third-party lenses (particularly wide-angle lenses) to work flawlessly on Sony FE cameras. Let’s hope the next generation FE camera will come with such a sensor. Exciting!

(SR4) A6xxx (or A7000) camera launch has been delayed (seems because of 4K heat issues)

[shoplink 8454 ebay][/shoplink]

I got two feedbacks from trusted sources about the A6000 successor (also rumored to be named “A7000”).

Source 1 told me the camera has been delayed and Sony did not say when they will launch it yet.
Source 2 actually had the chance to see the cam and said there was at least one big bug with 4K recording. The camera software kept crashing all the time.

They will let me know as soon as Sony will have a new launch timeframe. UPDATE: It’s important to remind you that there is a scheduled E-mount announcement event in May! Likely for the A7rII but I hope the A7000 will make it by then!

(SR4) Either RX or A-mount cameras coming on April 23. No E-mount on that day.

April23

I got one more confirmation from another trusted source that Sony will indeed launch new products on April 23. He also added that there will no E-mount camera or lens announcement on that day. These leaves us with two options:
1) Sony will launch new RX cameras. Very likely the RX2 with curved sensor and 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss. Or a new RX10 successor (The grat [shoplink 35004 ebay]Panasonic FZ1000[/shoplink] does 4K and costs less). Don’t think there will be a RX100m4 already…
2) Sony will launch a new A-mount camera. The A77II is only one year old so I guess we can either hope for a new A99II or a new A58II. Certainly a new A99II would be a strong signal that A-mount is alive!

Just for fun let me know…

I would love to get the...

Brand new Sony patent shows Curved Sensor FF camera with 35mm lens (and some variations).

RX2

The newly published (March 19) US patent “20150077619” describes what will likely become the first Curved Sensor Full Frame camera (probably the RX2). That’s what Sony writes:

Patent Background:

In recent years, the need for brightness of a shooting lens and an increase in the size of an imaging element which is effective in implementing low-noise shooting and a high dynamic range has increased, not to mention the need for an increase in image quality, a reduction in size, and a reduction in thickness.

Patent Summary:

The present technology is made to solve the above-mentioned problems, and it is desirable to provide a lens optical unit and an imaging device, which are capable of implementing high optical performance by performing size reduction and sufficient field curvature correction.
An imaging plane of the solid-state image sensor has a non-planar shape that causes a sag amount in an optical axis direction to increase as a distance from an optical axis increases, and a conditional expression (1) is satisfied (1) ρ×Sag>0, where ρ represents a Petzval curvature of an optical unit represented by

SAR resume: The patent says “non-planar” (curved) sensor allow lenses to be more compact compared to lenses designed for “planar” (flat) sensors. And they actually share full specs of those lenses

Full Frame lenses (RX2?):
29.96mm f/2.06 (likely to become a 30mm f/2.0)
36mm f/1.85 (likely to become a 35mm f/1.8)
36mm f/2.85 (likely to become a 35mm f/2.8)
36mm f/2.26 (likely to become a 35mm f/2.0)

For smaller sensors (1 inch RX100m4?):
10,79-25mm f/2.8-5.4

(SR4) Some more HX60 and WX350 successor camera info.

dsc-hx60v-1

I got some info about the new Sony fixed lens compact cameras (Thanks A.!):

1) HX60v successor will be essentially the same camera but smaller. It will be the size of the existing WX350 and include a viewfinder (TZ61 like).
2) WX350 will also be updated to include 30x Zoom without viewfinder.
