New Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens info by Dpreview and hands-on by Jason Vong

Share

We still have no info at all about the new Sigma 16mm f/1.4 pricing and shipment start. But at least we got a short Dpreview’s 16mm hands-on report. This is what they had to say about the new lens:

– In person, the new lens is a relatively small, but beautifully well-made prime
– At 405g (14 oz) it’s relatively heavy for its size
– While Sigma typically doesn’t make any specific claims about weather-sealing, a thin rubber ring around the lens throat should help keep dust and moisture from entering the camera.

Sony A7rIII is the second best seller camera at Amazon system camera sales ranking

Share

Of course this isn’t a scientific sentence: But the Sony a7rIII is the second best camera at Amazon system camera sales ranking (Click here to see it). By comparison not event the a9 or A7sII camera reached the top three position. Still take those Amazon rankings as a pure relative indication.

The “bad” news is that the new 24-105mm FE lens doesn’t even make it into the top 100 ranking. But usually people doesn’t hurry so much on lens preorders anyway.

Preorders:
Sony A7rIII at Amazon, Bhphoto, Adorama, BuyDig, FocusCamera, Calumet DE, Wex UK. Sony Australia.
Sony 24-105mm at Amazon, Bhphoto, Adorama, BuyDig, FocusCamera, Calumet DE, Wex UK.

Early estimated A7rm3 DR range from Photons to Photos sees no improvement over a7rm2

Share

Photonstophotos.net posted this chart based on estimated (Not actual measured”) Dynamic Range. I saw in the past that those estimations can be very off. So I wouldn’t read too much into it. Som why did I post this now? because this chart being shown on many website and I wanted to make it clear that is yet NOT the measured Dynamic Range.

Sony said that at low ISO the new A7rIII will be around 1 stop better than the A7rII. The chart above shows no such improvements. But my bet is on Sony and that actual measurements will show this improvement at Low ISO.

Preorders:
Sony A7rIII at Amazon, Bhphoto, Adorama, BuyDig, FocusCamera, Calumet DE, Wex UK. Sony Australia.
Sony 24-105mm at Amazon, Bhphoto, Adorama, BuyDig, FocusCamera, Calumet DE, Wex UK.

Sony also announced the new “Imaging Edge” Software Suite

Share

Sony also announced a new “Imaging Edge2 Software suite that will be soon available here: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/ie/en/. Sony writes:

“New with the α7R III is a software suite called “Imaging Edge” that extends the creative capabilities of the entire shooting process – from pre-processing to post-processing.  “Imaging Edge” provides three PC applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, available for free download, which support live-view PC remote shooting and RAW development.”

Alin Popescu had the chance to shortly see the new software and writes:

Imaging Edge provides three applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, that will be available for free download, which will support live-view remote shooting and RAW development. Also Edit will take care of the Pixel Shift Technology.

We’ve seen a pre-beta version of the software and I was curious about the Viewer capability to sort images fast, something similar to Photo Mechanic. Good news is that we don’t need to import a folder to select and rate photos. The bad is that we’ve seen it on a slow laptop and I can’t make a guess on how fast this software will be.

On Remote I’ve been attracted to the Manual Focusing feature: you have some controls on software with minor and major movement of focusing, directly from the computer. Lenses with Piezoelectric focusing motors, will be as precise as 1/1000 mm incremental movements. Add this to the magnified focusing and 42 mpx of resolution and you’re going to be the most precise photographer in focusing :).

Preorders:
Sony A7rIII at Amazon, Bhphoto, Adorama, BuyDig, FocusCamera, Calumet DE, Wex UK. Sony Australia.

Big comparison: Sony A7R III vs 5D Mark IV vs Nikon D850 vs Fuji GFX

Share

Imaging Resource posted this quick comparison between the current flagship cameras from each company:

It’s almost a matter of preference which of the remaining three does the best job with sharpness, and a lot of that has to do with color. The A7R III has a crispness to the blues in the eye that the other two seem to lack, resulting in a sort of grey overtone from both the Nikon and the Fuji. What may be the most impressive is how well the new Sony FE 24-105 f/4 hangs with Nikon’s new 24-70mm and Fuji’s 63mm.

Obviously it’s too early to draw any meaningful conclusion. But my bet is that the A7rIII will trump the D850 at DxOmark.
