Sony says we are not ready to launch our mirrorless system medium format camera yet…but…

European journalists met with Sony engineers and managers in Tokyo. While Sony did not release any comment about future products they talked about the medium format market. Photolari reports this:

  1. Sony said that at least for now they rule out the possibility to launch a medium format camera. The reason is that it takes a lot of time and resources to develop a new system with cameras, lenses and accessories
  2. At the same time Sony they have all the necessary resources (knowledge and components) to make such a medium format camera if they would like to do it.

As I stated many times, it only makes sense for Sony to launch a new medium format mirrorless camera with their larger 53x40mm sensor. There is really negligible IQ difference between FF and the “small” medium format sensor used by cameras like the Fuji GFX. I guess the real problem of using the 53x40mm sensor is the high production cost. But maybe one day…

Sony announces the third Generation Global Shutter Sensors

Share

Sony announced the new generation Pregious sensors featuring 4.5um pixel and faster frame rates:

And a long list of new industry sensors have been added on Sony’s site: sony-semicon.co.jp/products_en/IS/sensor0/products/cmos.html.

Note that all the sensors listed here are not meant to be used by classic photocameras. There is for example a new 1 inch monochrome sensor on this list that will be used by surveillance cameras. Surely not by any RX :) It has those specs:

Supports 20.48M-pixel readout at 21.98 frame/s in 12-bit mode
Supports a global reset function
Supports 4K video mode (4096H × 2160V, 10-bit mode, 59.94 frame/s)
Supports a variety of readout modes such as 10-bit high-speed all-pixel readout, 12-bit high-resolution readout, and vertical arbitrary cropping
High-sensitivity back-illuminated structure 2.4μm square unit pixel with a proven record in products for security camera and industrial applications
