The new 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 APS-C E-mount lens is now in Stock at Amazon US, Amazon DE, Amazon UK, Amazon FR, Amazon IT, Amazon ES.

And Marc Alhadeff is the first publishing a full review of the lens with the following conclusion:

The 7 Artisans 35mm F0.95 (249$) for E mount (APS-C = A6xxx) is certainly the best 7 Artisans lens for Sony I have tested so far.
Build quality is top notch , price is very reasonable for a F0.95 lens (249$) specially when you compare it with the Mitakon 35mm F0.95 Mark II (649$) that does not do better globally (even less in term of color rendering)
The sharpness is already good wide open and you can get perfectly sharp eyes or object details at f0.95 with a very good contrast. Background blur is very creamy in most cases and color rendition is excellent
A must have at that price

Interesting: In four years Sony quadrupled it’s value while Canon lost more than a third of it’s value

Sony market capitalization

Our reader George (Thanks!) made this interesting comparison:

From 2016 til today Sony increased it’s value from 27-105 billion
https://www.zacks.com/stock/chart/SNE/fundamental/market-cap
Canon’s value dropped from 32 down to 19 billion
https://ycharts.com/companies/CAJ/market_cap

In the pandemic Sony has steady growth, Canon steady decline.

CMOS sensor market share 2012:

Sony No.1 at 21%, Canon No.4 at 9%
https://evertiq.com/design/33804

Now. Sony No.1 at 49% and Canon is so miniscule it is not even listed anywhere.

Now this has nothing to do DIRECTLY with the camera market. But it’s clear that Canon is in deep trouble and the camera business isn’t a money machine anymore. If they can’t stop the bleeding it may well end up to directly influnce the camera business.

Also this year the camera business is falling off the cliff and this would have happened even without the Covid-19 outbreak (of course in a much less dramatic way):

RUMOR: Some more info on the new Sony A9 8K camera. Earliest announcement possible on January 11th at CES 2021?

Share

I got a small amount of info about the new Sony A9 camera from a reliable source:

  1. The final price has still not been set by Sony. But they are considering a price close to $4,999
  2. The camera could be announced in January 11 at the CES show (which is all virtual this year). But this second wave COVID-19 outbreak may mess with the timeline.

Rumored Sony A9III specs:

  • Sony will launch a new High End camera in Q1 2021. Maybe at the January 11 CES show (which is all virtual this year).
  • It will be named as an A9x series camera and not A7x (not sure if it’s “A9s” or “A9III”)
  • It will have a new ~50 megapixel sensor
  • 8k30p video confirmed with no overheating. It’s still an “infant” 8k mode…meaning it’s not 8k60 which would be crazy and there will be limitations in the quality you can record internally.
  • Other specs similar to A7sIII (EVF, autofocus, and so forth)
  • At least $1,500 more expensive than the EOS-R5 (but price hasn’t be finalized yet) Expect something like $4,999.

The sources will try to give me some more hints the coming weeks…stay tuned on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and chat with me live on Discord to not miss any rumors!

Panasonic S5 vs. Sony a7 III for Photography and Video

Share

With the S5 Panasonic released a very intresting enry level camera. The big problem is their autofocus performance when shooting videos. But put that aside and the camera is a worthy competitor of the Sony A7III. Here is the full report from Explora (article here).

For photography:

Pitting the S5 and a7 III against each other results in a very close battle. They seem to trade out features, making a decision based more on the specific things you want and less about which is flat-out better than the other. Panasonic offers advanced features like a High-Res Shot mode for 96MP JPEGs and raw images, Live View Composite, and plenty more. However, I believe the a7 III wins on some regular specs such as autofocus performance and continuous shooting. To be honest, pick whichever one you like best.

For video:

Videographers and filmmakers of all types will appreciate the advantages of the S5 over the a7 III—which is starting to show its age. The S5 offers 10-bit recording, which is incredibly important for high-quality video. It has a crop mode that enables 60p for 4K video. And, the screen is a free-angle design that is ideal for vlogging. The a7 III is still a great pick if you need photo performance as well, but the huge advantages of the S5 for video mean that if you are video first it is well worth it.
