Let’s speculate specs and release time for the new Sony A7IV. Will it be a “Mini-A7sIII” ?

When it comes to Sony we can be pretty certain the new Sony A7IV will not be a revolutionary camera. I expect this to be a sort of mini Sony A7sIII.

Possible release time:
Canon and Panasonic have released new nice $2,000-$2,500 cameras. But trusted sources told us Sony will announce the A7IV during the second half of 2021 only (no exact time frame given yet)

Possible specs (This should be an easy guess):

  • 24MP sensor (there is a version with 30MP sensor but I think 24MP is the safe bet for now).
  • 4k60P
  • 5.76m-dot (same as A7rIV but not as good as the A7sIII)
  • same A7sIII autofocus system
  • dual SD slot (it won’t need the new Express mini cards)
  • fully articulating selfie screen
  • new Sony A7sIII menu system
  • in general all expected layout and ergonomic improvements we got with the A7sIII

This would be a solid, expected improvement. And my guts tell me that my specs will be very accurate. What do you think?

Sony A7sIII review by Engadget: “The best mirrorless camera for video, and almost everything else”

David Pardue from Engadget tested the A7SIII and concluded:

I can’t find many faults with this camera. Sony has addressed nearly every complaint I’ve ever had about previous A7-series cameras, but it didn’t just stop there. It also improved autofocus and other features that I already liked, keeping the A7S III far ahead of rivals.

Its limitations are down to the high $3,500 price tag and low-resolution sensor, which rules out the A7S III for landscape and other types of high-detail photography. If you need that, get Sony’s similarly priced A7R IV with a category-leading 61 megapixels.

If budget is an issue and you need an all around hybrid camera, check out the Canon R6, Panasonic S5 or Sony’s own A7 III, all between $2,000 and $2,500. However, if you’re into video or low-light photography and have the budget, I’d highly recommend the A7S III. Feature for feature, it’s simply the best camera I’ve ever tested.

It’s official: Sony will now make drones too!

That’s big news folks! Today Sony announced it will make drones too! They will be branded “Airpeak”. Here is the teaser video:

Tokyo, Japan – Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that it has launched a new project for drones in the field of AI robotics.

The recent proliferation of drones has contributed greatly to the delivery of previously unseen images, as well as to workflow efficiency and energy savings in the industrial sector. Sony has assigned the “Airpeak” brand to reflect its aspiration to contribute to the further evolvement and the creation of the unprecedented value through its imaging and sensing technology as well as 3R technologies (Reality, Real-time and Remote) in the drone area.

Airpeak will support the creativity of video creators to the fullest extent possible, aiming to contribute to the further development of the entertainment industry as well as to improved efficiency and savings in various industries. Airpeak will also promote this project to enable drone-use with the highest level of safety and reliability in the environments where this has been difficult in the past.

Sony will continue to post project-related information and obtain feedback from drone users through co-creation activities to prepare for the launch of the project in the spring of 2021.
The company soon plans to begin seeking for the partners in the professional space who can collaborate on the project.
