Luminous Landscape reviews the Phase One XF with the huge Sony 100MP sensor

What is it like to shoot with the Phase One XF featuring the impressive 53.7 x 40.4mm  100MP Sony sensor?

Luminous Landscape posted a detailed review and here are just a few notes:

“Image quality, as expected, was nothing less than incredible. The Highlight and Shadow recovery tools in Capture One easily helped to recover any of these, and allowed an image of incredible detail and light to dark range.  In many of my landscape images, I loved the subtle details in shadows that would have gone completely black with other systems. You have to experience the 100MP images as prints to truly appreciate the detail.

Image quality is not determined by megapixels alone.  While megapixels certainly play a part, it is the quality of the file that sets it apart.  Phase One’s 16-bit capture with a 15 stop dynamic range becomes very obvious when doing comparison images from some of the higher megapixel DSLRs.

Contrary to the many naysayers, medium format is coming to life again.  Pentax has a system, and Hasselblad has their system, and a new camera they just introduced, and rumors abound that even Sony and Fuji are looking into the medium format business.  Medium format is alive and well.”

With Sony working close with Phase One and Hasselblad I think it’s hard to see a Sony medium format camera any time soon. But for sure I would love to see Sony making a medium format mirrorless system camera just like Hasselblad did with the X1D!

Samyang re-announces (LOL) the 50mm AF FE lens

As you know Samyang promised to announces a new lens every Monday. Well yesterday’s announcement was underwhelming as they basically re-annnounced the Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AF lens for the Sony E-mount. The only real additional news is that the price in Europe will be 580 Euro (Soruce: Photoscala).

Reminder: The new Samyang 50mm f/1.4 FE autofocus lens is now available for preorder through BHphoto (Click here). Note that it’s branded Rokinon in USA and Wallimex in Germany-UK.

The new Nikon 105mm f/1.4 versus the [shoplink 48572]Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount lens[/shoplink]

Nikon will soon announce one of those new kind of products Sony should really “clone” as soon as it gets! On August 26 they will announce a new 105mm f/1.4 lens that will be priced around $2,200. This is one of those lenses that unleashes a highly “I want it” gear acquisition syndrome. I guess Sony is currently developing an E-mount version of their equally exciting [shoplink 48572]Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount lens[/shoplink]. But let’s see if a faster 105mm lens would be welcomed by our community:

Should Sony make a 135mm f/1.4 FE lens priced at $2,000-$2,500?

The new Laowa 12mm f/2.8 E-mount lens on the Sony A7s

As I reported yesterday on July 30 Venus Optics will Kickstart a new Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Full Frame lens that will be available for both Sony mounts (A and E). We now got confirmations that there is now an additional special additional product for the E-mount folk:

It will be a E-mount Magic Shift Converter to convert the lens from 12mm f/2.8 (DSLR) into 17mm f/4 with +/- 10mm SHIFT & 360 rotation (Full Frame E-mount). The glass elements inside the converter ENLARGE the image circle of the lens in order to fulfil the shifting! See attached photo:
