(SR5) A58, NEX-3N, and three A-mount lens to come soon!
Sources from SAR and Digicaminfo got the same info about the upcoming release:
In very last moment it looks like Sony decided to drop the A38 and just release the A58! And this is what Sony will announce soon:
- SLT-A58 with a new 20MP sensor (actually it’s 20,xx and almost close to 21 Megapixels). Priced around 600-700 dollars/euro.
- NEX-3N, 16Megapixel sensor (same as F3) priced at 500-600 dollars/euro
- Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 for 1600-1700 dollars/euro
- 18-55mm II for A mount at around 200-300 dollars/euro
- 70-400G F4.5-5.6 II 2400-2500 dollars/euro (to ship in April!)
And a smart SAR reader found the evidence for the new 70-400mm in the latest firmware: “Looks like SAL-70400G2 is ready for release, fw for a99 contains the lens correction profile for that lens. This profile is identical to the profile for the known SAL-70400G, so no changes in optical formula. LensID is 69, “old” one has LensID 53. No such lens profiles for rumored SAL-70200G2 or announced SAL-50F14Z yet.”
Stay tuned on SAR!

5 months ago |Very exciting. With my warranty for A55 instead of repair they replace with current model. Is it wrong to hope something happens to A55 when this is released? Haha
Looking forward to more info and in particular the A78 which is looking more real every week.

5 months ago |That 70-400G is totally outpriced. Even Canon L glass is cheaper and that is optically stabilised. Unless that lens delivers a never seen IQ, its a no go for me.

5 months ago |Whats up with those ridiculous prices manufactures are asking these days for lensens $1600 for a 50mm and $2400 for a 70-400 replacement… Sorry but this is getting way out of proportions.
Gabriel
5 months ago |The 50 mm is a Zeiss, it’s the same difference between mass market car and a Rolls
Spuds
5 months ago |Point is the amount of labor in both lenses is about the same to build one, not much difference in parts either. Bottom line is marketing hype. With the advent of photoshop and software to correct for distortion these hyper pricey lenses are a joke.
LensIsAll
5 months ago |If after comparing Zeiss to random 3rd party lens it’s just a “marketing gimmick” for you, then we have nothing to discuss here.
Jonathan S.
5 months ago |Actually, there is a substantial difference between the Sony Zeiss lenses and their regular Sony counterparts, both in terms of materials, design and of course results. It’s like the other poster put it, it’s the difference between a Toyota Scion and a Lexus. Same manufacturer, they’ll both get good mileage, get you to the supermarket, but one does it in style and comfort, maybe with more safety and all the latest technology. It’s kind of like that.
kevin
5 months ago |Why do people use Toyota as a reference?
Wheelus
5 months ago |Lenses are not just about optics these days. They contain electronics such as auto focus motors and communicate with the camera body and flash. The new Sigmas have that “thingy” that you attach to lens to allow for firmware updates. Old film cameras and lenses still take great photographs, but photographers today want their cameras and lenses to do everything for them, so they are more complex which means more money. In the old film days, you never heard of lenses and cameras that were weather sealed. Now everyone wants equipment that they can use to take photographs in a tornado. Again, more money.

LensIsAll
5 months ago |I don’t know to be honest. But I’m quite sure it won’t be pancake.
What might be changed or improved in 18-55? It’s a kit lens, so I have bit of a trouble trying to figure out what they can improve without raising a price by a significant margin. New optical design might be required for high-resolution sensors, but other then that? No idea really. I’d love to see weather sealing or SAM II (like in 18-135 – silent), or best: both!
The Lotus Eater
5 months ago |I’d love for Sony to weather-seal their whole Alpha range, but I doubt that is going to happen.
SAM II is much more likely. The 18-55 is already pretty good optically.
WB

And double fail on 70-400 II price. That is insane.

DiBok
5 months ago |Agree on the 70400G2
Comparing that to Canon with last years renewal of the 2470L2, they started with store prices at 2299€ here in Germany. Now a few month later it is at 1899€.
Presumably the same will happen to the 70400G2. Paying 700-800€ (current retail price is 1699€) for a weather sealing is more than ridiculous.
I would rate it fair if the optical formula would be prepared for upcoming sensors.
Lucas
5 months ago |….”And no FF for 2013? Just one SLT FF…fail Sony.”…
I don’t get it, why “fail”? Isn’t one FF body enough for you?

And if it is also with an unmodified optical formula, forget it..

5 months ago |1700 euros for a 50mm? lol
TomiZG
5 months ago |Exactly, LOL. What does it do, you get 4 Sigmas 50 1.4 and they are not behind the Zeiss, no way the Zeiss can be so much better to justify such a ridiculous price.
If it was an 85 1.2 I would pay 1700 Euro. Yes. But this is just funny.
John Maverick
5 months ago |Canon EF 50/1.2 is $1,619.00 at B&H and it’s a less complicated lens albeit a half stop faster.
LensIsAll
5 months ago |F/1.2 is an unique lens unavailable in other systems. Hence the uber-high prize. Zeiss is nothing alike!
John Maverick
5 months ago |No, it’s just different. Zeiss microcontrast etc. There’s nothing particularly special about f/1.2 after you’ve shot one a few times.
LensIsAll
5 months ago |How about “Only modern 50 f/1.2 lens available” part?
John Maverick
5 months ago |Plenty of people still shooting lenses like converted 58/1.2 Rokkor. Consider also that something like a Zeiss 100/2 makro planar will have stronger subject separation/bokeh than 50/1.2.
LensIsAll
5 months ago |Point still stands. Being an only modern 50 f/1.2 with AF on a market can justify high price. Being yet another 50 f/1.4 can’t justify 1500$ price tag. Even if it’s Zeiss with weather sealing and SSM.
John Maverick
5 months ago |1.2 is a number that appeals to people that like stats. Zeiss are a top-tier lens maker. Of course they can charge a price comprable with a Canon. It hasn’t been released, nor it’s performance known, and people are already complaining!
LensIsAll
5 months ago |Again – this lens is 50 f/1.4. Not 35 f/1.4, nor 50 f/1.2.
Again – 50 f/1.4 are cheapest full frame lenses on a market.
So seeing 1500$ price tag on something like that surely makes people astonished. It’s like if you’d release 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 for 2000$ – even if it’d be Zeiss people would be astonished to see such a price tag on a lens like that.
Seeky
5 months ago |Don’t bother with the price! Depending on the performance it may be a no brainer or overpriced.
Sky_walker
5 months ago |Even if it’s razor-sharp wide open – I’m sure people will complain about the price.
Especially when Zeiss is about to release manual focus 50 f/1.4 with even greater diameter most likely providing even better image quality for lower price.
Almazar80
5 months ago |The Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 is listed at $1400 U.S. That’s a third party lens. People wanted fast high quality primes. They’re getting it. Not selling for what you think they should be? Well, the pros who need them will buy them. For the rest of us, the current Sony and Minolta lenses still work quite well.

The yens are coming down and I would think their selling price should also come down!

5 months ago |Cool rumors! I *suspect* the A58 is replacing both the A57 and A65 (as there’s no A66 rumors flying around). If so, the A58 will probably get the good EVF from the A65/A77 – I really can’t see Sony continuing to sell ‘old’ EVF tech in the mid-range cameras for another 18 months. And if if if so, it could be the reasonably-priced upgrade from my A700 I have been waiting for. Yey!
Frank

Kursad Sezgin
5 months ago |I just got my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for ~$445 from B&H and it’s a very good piece of glass. Calculation is simple: Sigma 50mm + Sigma 35mm = 445+900=$1.335 which is still 200usd cheaper than Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.4. I’d buy 2 UV filters with this additional bucks

5 months ago |I’m very glad they are finally coming up with a new aps-c-censor, the performance has been stuck for too long. Even m4/3 has cought up. NEX-3N will be the third generation of cameras with the same sensor, except for the phase detection pixels. If they have improved the sensor nicely and use it for the new generations NEXes, I’ll probably have to upgrade. 20 megapixels sounds just right too!
Gabriel
5 months ago |Current 16mpx is a very good sensor. Even with progess in engineering sensor, i doubdt that adding 4mpx make the sensor really better.
John Maverick
5 months ago |m4/3 haven’t caught up. Olympus just inflate their ISO numbers. The omd-em5 sensor is a SONY sensor, same generation as the 16Mp APS-C.
Peksu
5 months ago |DxOMark takes that into account and says the sensor performance of E-M5 in virtually identical to the sonys.
I don’t wan more pixels per se, but if they have kept the per-pixel performance the same (or even improved), I don’t mind gradually going up. Sony 24MPix sensor sacrificed some per-pixel performance for resolution, I’m hoping the new one is on par with the latest m4/3s and beats them by about a stop.

5 months ago |I “was” looking forward to upgrading my 70-400, but it looks like it’ll cost me close to a grand after I sell my current one. I’m suspicious of the claim made here that the new lens will have the same optic profile, and that it will now be slower (that could have just been a typo).
The 70-400 has terrible bokeh and for that reason alone I would want to upgrade to an improved version. Weather sealing would also be hugely important in a lens primarily intended for outdoor wildlife or sports photography. I don’t care about the silver color, they can change it or keep it, doesn’t matter to me. Just fix my bokeh and seal the lens and I’ll be putting my current one on ebay and snatching up a new one.

Bill
5 months ago |Not sure how well it is going to sell at the listed price. The most expensive 50mm f/1.4 at B&H right now is the Zeiss Planar T* Manual focus for Canon and Nikon at $725. The new lens has auto focus, weather sealing, and I would expect be produced in smaller quantities, which increases the price a bit. But double the price does seem extreme. For more budget sensitive, the Sigma and Sony lenses are available for $450 and $423. Of course if the new lens can out resolve a 54 MP FF sensor, it could be worth every penny to those who may be shooting such cameras in a few years.

Kursad Sezgin
5 months ago |Let’s make a simple calculation now. Let’s assume that Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 is $1.599.
Sigma 50mm f/1.4 = $449
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 = $899
Total = $1.348
$1.599 – $1.348 = $251
Now you can go and get a couple of UV and polarizer filters too, for your new Sigma’s. Did you get my point?

5 months ago |Looked up a few price comparison. Zeiss lenses versus Sony Zeiss. All the Zeiss are manual focus and are the Nikon mount price. B&H list price, no discounts
24mm Sony Zeiss f/2 $1,400
25mm Zeiss f/2 $1,700
85mm Sony Zeiss f/1.4 $1,700
85mm Zeiss f/1.4 $1,283
135mm Sony Zeiss f/1.8 $1,800
135mm Zeiss f/2 $2,122
Sometimes the Sony is a little cheaper sometimes a little more. Biggest difference is the 85mm the Sony is $417 more or 32% more. If this held for the 50mm it would place the Sony at $990. The Sony135 f/1.4 is a nice lens but not weather sealed which might add a few hundred more. So $1,200 to $1,300 would be considered reasonable to me, and the price may drop to that level after it has been out a while.

You still think it sounds reasonable after comparing with other lenses?

Means, no PDAF? Yet shipped with the new 16-50/3.5-5.6 powerzoom? Strange.

Completely false rumor from the beginning (never existed) ? Or just postponed ?
PS: Do you really can believe that a company can drop a product at the last moment? (few weeks before announcement?).

5 months ago |WOW I can get a mint used 70-400G for $1350 now, what the hell is Sony thinking adding weather seal and keeping the same optical elements and sell the 70-400G II for 2500? is that extra $1150 really worth it????
The 50 1.4CZ is expensive as well, it’s in the same price of Canon 50 1.2L.

5 months ago |I understand that this is all just rumor till Sony makes official announcements. But the main thrust of this year according to Sony (or is it SonyAlphaRumors) is to update the product from the bottom up……
So, it is a little strange that Sony delays the bottom 3x series and updates only the 5x series.
Who knows, maybe Sony will announce a new 7x, 8x, or 9x body or even a 9xx

5 months ago |More and more Sony bodies – does the NEX line have more bodies than lenses now? Not counting ‘adapted’ lenses of course.
Also the 70-400 price is highway robbery – no reason that lens should cost that much – it doesn’t even have IS built-in! Yes I realize Alpha bodies have a mediocre form of IS built in, but it’s far less effective than in-lens IS. I had a Sigma OS 70-200 that was far better disabling the in-body IS and using the lens IS. Just sayin’. Sony gets you coming and going.

5 months ago |An “almost” 21mp sensor. And here I was hoping for a next generation 16mp. I hope it will not be another round of A65/A77 noisy mess. They can’t possibly make a camera that has worse ISO performance than a previous generation, can they?
RickJ
5 months ago |Relax Stan, some people are happy actually taking pictures with their A65/A77′s and not just zooming into crops all day to compare pixels.
Stan
5 months ago |I’m not zooming into crops, if thats what you’re assuming… Lots of my pictures are taken in pretty dark areas, such as parties with insufficient lighting. My biggest problem with my A55 was the noise that it produced. Yes, it outclassed all point and shoots, cellphones and other cameras in a lower class, but if it had higher usable low noise ISO, like my brother’s Nikon D5100 @ ~1200, I’d be much happier. I would’ve bought a D5200, but i just don’t like their menu system. For some reason it seems weird to me. I’ve just recently sold my A55, while it still had value and i’m pretty much ready for a next gen camera. If sony dropped SLT and shoved PDAF on sensor into a new camera, it’d be a perfect camera for me. And please don’t mention NEX-5R. Last thing i need is adapters to use my lenses and a tiny camera body.

5 months ago |Sounds to me like you need to learn how to use LR.
Stan
5 months ago |That could be a possibility…
For now what I see in LR4 is that noise reduction applied to my brother’s pictures seems to mess up jpeg’s much less than NR applied to A55 pics. I had to use more color noise suppression on my A55, because it had distinctively more pronounced chroma noise.

5 months ago |According to three online review websites including DXOmark, Nikon’s D5200 sensor soundly beats all Sony cropped bodies in overall IQ. The same for D3200 D600 and especially D800. I care nothing for video and am all about image quality and currently Nikon is dominating in that regard. I prefer Sony’s body design especially with EVF and hope Sony will surpass Nikon with the next line of bodies and please no more SLT I understand the benefit but it along with AAfilter make fine details all smudgy like a point and shoot.
Stan
5 months ago |Drop SLT and there’s your extra low ISO performance that Nikon seems to have. Just compare A57 vs NEX-5N, or A77 vs NEX-7
Stan
5 months ago |Too bad Sony hasn’t introduced the flip-up SLT option yet. Would be nice to take advantage of an extra half-stop of high ISO performance.

5 months ago |What a boring announcement!! A list of mild upgrades and copies of what they already have. What about some products that would fill real gaps in the lineup?
(*) Wide-angle primes for E-mount/A-mount APS-C: why is there no 16 mm or 20 mm f/2 lens? Not a pancake, but a good performing lens. It should be easier to make and cheaper than full frame lenses at these focal lengths.
(*) 35 mm for A-mount fullframe: there is only one choice from Sony now which does not live up to its price.

It’s a design from 1987.
Only thing that changed ever since was focusing motor and coatings.
