How Sony’s TERRIBLE Cameras Beat Canon & Nikon

Northrup:

In the 2000’s and early 2010’s, Sony’s cameras were TERRIBLE. They were SO FAR behind Canon and Nikon that it seemed impossible for them to catch up… but, they did catch up around 2018, and in 2019 Sony solidly surpassed the Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras. HOW DID THEY DO IT?! I researched it and the answers are fascinating and directly relatable to your personal life and business.

This is the new Laowa 4mm f/2.8 APS-C E-mount lens

VenusOptics will soon announce this new Laowa 4mm f/2.8 APS-C E-mount lens. The Chinese Weibo member CameraBeta writes (google translated):

The new lens uses 6 groups of 7 optical structures and 7 aperture blades, which can provide a 210 ° viewing angle, a maximum magnification of 0.11 times, a size of 45.2 x 25.5mm, and a weight of 135g. The lens has Sony E mount and M43, Fuji X, Canon EF-M mount version. This time Beta got the Sony E mount version. The lens equipped with α9 II body looks extremely small. The lens is made of metal and has a very good texture. The focus handle feels good and the damping is just right, allowing you to easily grasp each scale. After the specific shooting effect, Beta will share it with everyone.

For our German readers: New German Sony Alpha Forum launched

We already had an English SonyAlphaForum. But we now also launched a native German Forum at sonyalphaforum.de. The new community offers a German language platform for everyone interested in Sony’s E-Mount system, both full format (e.g. Sony A9 and Sony A7 series) and APS-C (with Sony A6000, A6500 and successors). Over the last weeks an active community has developed with almost 1,000 members, still gaining new members.

A small revolution might just have happened: Canon says they will only make new EF lenses if there is demand for it…from now it’s RF lenses for mirrorless only!

Canon is now following the steps of Sony and “virtually” gave up on their EF lens development. Canon manager Richard Shepherd old at Digitalcameraworld:

“To date we’ve launched ten critically acclaimed RF lenses, and as it’s a new system we plan to continue this, launching more RF lenses while still fully supporting the EF lens system. And of course, should the market demand it, we are ready to create new EF lenses. But for now, our focus is on RF.”

So, de facto Canon is now using all their resources to develop RF lenses only. Don’t think they will ever go back on EF lens development…just like Sony dind’t make any A-mount lens (and camera) for a very long time now.

What I find odd is to read a statement like this the days after the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III announcement. A nice way to kill some sales :)
