Sony Boosts Full-Frame Lens Line-up with Introduction of 35mm F1.8, Lightweight Prime
Sony today announced the latest addition to its E-mount full-frame lens line-up with the introduction of a FE 35mm F1.8 large-aperture wide-angle prime lens, model SEL35F18F.
The compact dimensions and light weight of this full-frame, large-aperture prime lens provide mobility and convenience for shooting a wide range of subjects from everyday snapshots, food photography, landscapes, night scenes and more. The new lens provides outstanding corner-to-corner image quality from a maximum F1.8 aperture and its quiet autofocus and tenacious tracking performance make it a great choice for both stills and movie shooting. Its small size mean it is equally suited to APS-C as well as full-frame bodies, offering a 52.5mm equivalent[i] focal length that is perfect for snapshots, portraits and more.
Product Highlights:
High resolution and large-aperture full-frame performance in compact and lightweight lens
Large F1.8 maximum aperture, weighing in at just 280 grams and measuring 65.6 mm (diameter) by 73.0mm (length); this new lens sets a new standard for portability.
Smart optical construction including an aspherical element to suppress aberration and deliver high resolution throughout the entire image frame. 9-blade circular aperture enables beautiful bokeh.
Minimum focus distance of 0.22m and maximum magnification of 0.24x offer easy access to the world of close-up photography.
Versatile control and handling for a wide range of imaging needs
Conveniently placed, customisable focus hold button and a focus mode switch for instantaneous switching between auto and manual focus.
Linear Response Manual Focus for fine, responsive manual focus control.
Dust and moisture resistant design[ii] add to the versatility and reliability of this new lens and invoke a feeling of confidence in the user.
Quiet AF with excellent tracking for movies as well as stills
Fast, precise and quiet linear-motor AF drive system for precise focus for both stills and movies where “wobbling” is employed for delicate continuous focus control.
“A 35mm prime lens is a go-to lens for so many photographers as its versatility means that it is the right choice for so many different kinds of shot,” said Yann Salmon-Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing for Digital Imaging, Sony Europe. “Our new 35mm FE lens combines brilliant corner to corner clarity with a truly lightweight design and we are confident that it will appeal to a wide range of stills and movie shooters.”

Press release:
Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 Macro 1:1 into the art of cinematography
IRIX, known for high mechanical and optical quality, pleasantly presents the 150mm T 3.0 macro 1:1 – the first of a new cinematography line of the full-frame sensor lenses.
The new line of Irix Cine Lenses is created in close cooperation with professional filmmakers; their ideas and suggestions were an important factor in the design process. The designers earlier experience in the field of photography led us to create new and better solutions for the Irix Cine products.
Proven optics The Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 Macro 1:1 is the first lens in a new line of full frame sensor cine lenses, ready for 8K UHD. It’s complex optical system is based on the same optical layout used in the Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1. The lens consists of 12 optical elements arranged in 9 groups, four of which are high refractive index (HR) glass, and three low-dispersion glass (ED). Because of these elements, this lens offers superb high resolution, nearly zero chromatic aberration and has almost no visible distortion (as low as 0,1%). The optical system is equipped with an internal focusing system. The lens was designed to have as little breathing as possible.
Refined mechanics In the eyes of a camera operator, a good and tough housing is of major importance. Irix is known for fine mechanical constructions, and in the Cine range we pushed this even further, focussing on superb operation ergonomics and a high precision mechanism. Quiet and smooth rotation of the focus ring was achieved thanks to the new MST lens positioning system – created specially for the Irix Cine range. The Multi Start Thread mechanism, in combination with a sealed housing, ensures durable and long-term operation of the lens in various atmospheric conditions even in the most demanding situations. The rotation angle of the focus ring is increased to 270 degrees, which makes focusing easy and accurate at any range. The lens will be available with both metric and imperial markings.
Highest attention has been paid to the aperture mechanism in these optics, where eleven iris blades with rounded edges create great bokeh and sharpness. The Irix Cine 150mm also significantly reduces the diffraction effect when filming at low aperture values. The de-clicked aperture ranges from T3.0 to T32. The aperture ring rotates 75 degrees.
Unique design and well thought-out ergonomics The Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 Macro 1:1 lens stands out for it’s great ergonomics and design. The side edges of the focus gear-rings are shielded by a special ring, providing a larger area for better manual handling – whilst still compatible with follow-focus systems. Further information about the Adaptive Ring System will be provided later. The markings on the lens are laser engraved and treated with UV fluorescent paint, to improve the readability in low light conditions.SAR
Prepared for all weather conditions The Irix Cine 150 mm T3.0 Macro 1:1 has been designed as a versatile tool in the hands of a filmmaker, built to withstand various weather conditions. The housing is equipped with several seals to create a barrier for dust, rain and accidental splashes of water. The sealed construction ensures the safety of both the optical lens system and the camera sensor.
Innovation as standard The exceptional functionality and innovative solutions are a distinctive feature of all Irix products. This lens has been equipped with an unique Magnetic Mount System for accessories. The MMS system allows quick and easy attachment of variety dedicated accessories. The first of the new MMS accessories is the detachable and reversible lens hood (included with a lens). More accessories coming soon.
Created to be part of the cine gear family Making innovations doesn’t mean we resign from the industry standards. We know how important compatibility is for a filmmaker, with other accessories. Irix Cine lenses have standardized front diameter 95mm for matte box, 86mm front filter thread, unified distance between gear-rings within the whole family range (future developments), standardized 0,8 pitch module gears, unified angles of rotation, and similar weight. The Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 lens is equipped with a removable support foot with a 1/4 thread, which stabilizes the lens when using a follow focus system, and protects the camera mount. The support foot can be attached on the bottom or top of the lens for convenience of use.
Available camera mounts The new Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 Macro 1:1, as well as future Irix Cine lenses, will be offered in following lens mounts: Canon EF, Sony E, MFT and PL.
Price and availability The price and availability of the Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 Macro 1:1 lens will be announced shortly.
