(SR3) Sony rumored ot launch two FE lenses at Photokina: 24mm F/1.4 GM FE and 135mm F/1.8 GM FE

I just got this rumor but I have to yet confirm it with other sources. So it’s not 100% reliable yet. But according to that source Sony will announce two new GM lenses at Photokina:

Sony 24mm F/1.4 GM FE
Sony 135mm F/1.8 GM FE

I hope to be able to post more info about these lenses soon.  The sources did not tell me anything about a possible camera release. I hope he can tell me if both the A6700 and A7sIII will be announced at Photokina or PhotoPlus. Thanks!

(SR3-SR5) The new rumored E-mount lenses from Sony, Zeiss, Samyang, Sigma…

The leaked image of the new Zeiss 40mm f/2.0 FE Batis

These are the lenses that are likely to be announced in 2018 and 2019:

(SR4) Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM FE
Probably coming at Photokina. The lens launch got delayed from Spring to Photokina because of noise issues. The new developed version will be slightly larger.

(SR5) Zeiss Batis 40mm f/2.0 CF FE lens
Announcement likely between Photokina and PhotoPlus. Specs:
Distagon optical design
The shortest shooting distance is 0.24 m
With focus limiter (Full / ∞ ~ 0.4 m / 0.5 m to 0.24 m)
Filter diameter is 67 mm
Batis Size close to 85mm (40mm is slightly smaller)

(SR4) Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 FE lens:
This lens could be announced at Photokina.

(SR3) 200-600mm G FE:
I heard the 200-600mm FE is on the Sony roadmap and that it should be announced some time after the 400mm FE availability.

(SR3) 500mm and 600mm f/4.0 GM FE:
Both lenses are being developed by Sony and one of these could be announced in late 2019 at earliest.

(SR4) 135mm FE GM:
The lens is scheduled to be released in 2019. I am not 100% sure about the aperture but it should be f/1.8.

(SR4) Samyang:
One more Samyang AF lens will be announced this year

(SR4) Tokina:
New super wide FE lens and and new FE zoom to be announced between Photokina and early 2019

(SR4) Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM lens should be announced at Photokina…

Sigma 24mm 1.4 ART lens and Samyang 24mm 2.8 pancake

I told you some time ago that the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM lens was actually supposed to be announced in Spring. A trusted source told me this when it will be announced and why the lens launch got delayed:

The annnouncement of 24mm f1.4GM was postponed due to AF noise issue. Sony changed size of its lens.
Anyway this lens supposed to be announced until photokina.

Sony “serious” answer to Canon and Nikon’s new FF mirrorless will follow soon after their announcement

Image of the new Nikon FF mirrorless

On August 23 Nikon will launch the new Z6 and Z7 camera along an impressive 58mm f/0,95 lens (full specs here). And Canon is rumored ot announce their FF mirrorless on September 4/5 (info here).

In these days had an informal chat with people close to Sony. They have been told by Sony managers that Sony is not “unprepared” by Canon and Nikon’s FF mirrorless launch. I guess with not unprepared they mean they more or less know what kind of specs those cameras will have.

And they also said Sony has new tech and the necessary resources to outperform both systems. They told me to “expect a serious answer after the Canon/Nikon announcements

Of course Nikon and Canon folks can argue that this might be only some bullish manager talk. But somehow I got the feeling that in this case Sony is telling the truth. Canon and Nikon surely can make cameras with better ergonomy. But Sony is learning fast and after all they have the leading tech when it comes to sensor quality and other electronic parts (like the new 5.6 million dots EVF).

It would be nice to get a new stunning Sony A7sIII right after the Canon and Nikon announcements. Something that will “out-wow” them :)

Rumor says Sigma still uncertain if they will release the new 70-200mm lens for E-mount in September

The bokeh beast at BHphoto and Adorama.

I just got a short note from a Sigma source:

Sigma will announce new lenses on September possibly 70-200 but they don’t know if it’s possible to make for Sony e-mount .

Sigma officially stated that making E-mount zooms is complicated because of the autofocus algorithm. Let’s see if Sigma can tackle this issue in time for the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens launch at Photokina.

The new Nikon mount teaser: Why the 43.8×32.9mm sensor size makes little sense

Nikon image teaser compared with Sony E-mount (Thanks Jmar – see video here).

Now, before I argue why this sensor makes little sense and people start to scream how fanboy I am I will say this:

1) I am happy Nikon and Canon will join the mirrorless world. This will finally put some pressure on Sony.
2) Nikon and Canon new mirrorless offering will likely be better than Sony cameras when it comes to ergonomic, menu, weather sealing and other important aspects Sony has still to catch up with.

I know there is a lot of people saying the larger mount will help to improve the IQ of fast lenses. Something we have to see and test to see if it’s true. And even if it’s true I doubt people will join the system to buy very expensive f/0.9 lenses…

Nikon says this is a Full Frame sensor camera. But it is also speculated on the web that Nikon did adopt a 65mm mount size diameter in order to eventually fit the larger 43.8×32.9mm sensor. And this (rumor) makes little sense to me:

1) This sensor is only 1.5 larger in terms of area over Full Frame. But the production costs are much higher.
2) In no way this sensor seems to be visibly better than the best Full Frame sensors (Check DxOmark scores or anythe Dpreview X1D review conclusion)
3) Lenses are really much heavier, costlier to produce and slower.
4) The medium format sensor market is totally dominated by Sony. There is no competition here and few sensor to choose from. All of them will be used by all manufacturers. Unless Nikon found a way to get sensors from somewhere else (Towerjazz?)

That said I will repeat myself once more: I hope that if Sony will ever join the medium format world they will go for the larger 54x40mm sensor. It would become a mirrorles system for ultimate quality. Something no other manufacturer could ever match.

P.s.: Canon where are you?
