Sigma 16mm f/1.4 E-mount lens review by Lenstip

Lenstip is one of the best review sites you can find. And they just tested the new 16mm f/1.4 E-mount lens:

The Sigma C 16 mm f/1.4 DC DN is not a flawless device; especially in the area close to f/1.4 you can find several distinct shortcomings. Still you have to remember that those shortcomings disappear on slight stopping down of the aperture and image quality improves very quickly too. As a result this lens’s resolution levels are close to record values on both types of sensors and we mean here records achieved by lenses several times more expensive than the tested one.

Pros:

  • good quality casing,
  • sensational image quality in the frame centre,
  • sensible resolution on the edge of the frame,
  • slight lateral chromatic aberration,
  • moderate vignetting,
  • nice out-of-focus areas,
  • silent and fast autofocus,
  • good price quality ratio.

Cons:

  • a bit too high longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • not completely corrected spherical aberration,
  • too high distortion,
  • coma visible in the corners of both types of detectors,
  • noticeable astigmatism.

James:We shot about half of this film with the Sony a7RIII. I used the 24-70 GM (tripod shots) and 12-24 (gimbal shots).  It’s part of the Uber 90-Second Film Fest.  If you like it please like it (thumbs up button) because that’s how they’re judging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w22Jca4Z4Cw We’re out of Portland, Oregon.  Arya of DocuCreative wrote, produced, and directed the film.”

Chris:I wanted to share a video of why I use the Sony a6500, I love the camera and I hope other people fall in love with Sony Camera as I have. Why I Use The Sony a6500 https://youtu.be/9Ps7kWLbPug

Josef:I’ve bought this lens as well and I have to agree with this video. Even when you update the latest FW on camera and the 2.0 fw version on the lens it just focuses like shit.  For me this is oon of the biggest drawback I had since I switched to sony. I was seriously reconsidering my choice to jump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2iI_m9ny1Y

Interview with the GM lens designers

Share

DC.watch (google translation) interviewed the designers of the GM lens series. THe article contains a lot of technical details. Here are just a few interesting bits:

– The GM lens series development started at the time of the Sony A7rII launch. And it took only 1 year until the first GM lens was launched.
– GM lenses are designed for maximal performance and size is not important. But they try to keep the size within reasonable limits.
– The most important factor was to realize high-resolution and at the same time high quality bokeh
– The conventional standard lenses have a resolving power of 30 lines/mm while GM lenses can do 50 lines/mm

Sony Opens Up Registration for One-of-a-Kind “Kando Trip” Photography Event

Immersive “Kando Trip” Experience will feature extensive educational workshops, shooting opportunities, camera and lens trials and much more

SAN DIEGO, Jan 25, 2018 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has announced today that they are opening up their flagship “Kando Trip” photography experience to public applications.

The event will take place May 9-12th at beautiful oceanfront Asilomar Conference Grounds in Monterrey, CA. The 4 day, 3 night, all-inclusive experience will offer attendees a choice of over 20 interactive classes and workshops covering many different genres of photography, video storytelling, business and social media best practices, software and hardware tutorials from partner sponsors and more. Additionally, there will be shooting sessions at several iconic locations along the Monterey/Big Sur coastline, keynote speakers, product feedback sessions, contests, giveaways and many other fun activities. Throughout the event, attendees will have access to loaners and trials of all of Sony’s most popular cameras, lenses and accessories.

“‘Kando’, a term near and dear to our hearts at Sony, can be translated to ‘the power to stimulate an emotional response’, or ‘to make people say ‘Wow”,” said Neal Manowitz, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Electronics. “We are continually striving to deliver ‘Kando’ with everything that we do – every product, service, activity and campaign. ‘Kando Trip’ is the ultimate representation of this concept. It’s an event exclusively designed for our community – a chance to for us all to interact, learn and grow together, with ‘wow’ experiences waiting around every corner.”

The experience will feature a variety of classes led by many of Sony’s brand evangelists from the Artisans of Imagery and Alpha Imaging Collective programs, with a common goal of allowing attendees to develop both their photography and their careers. Throughout the event, there will also be opportunities to meet, share ideas and give feedback to Sony’s engineering, product planning, marketing, and business teams, all of which will be in attendance.

To apply for this event, please visit www.AlphaUniverse.com/kandotrip. Spaces are limited.
