(SR5) UPDATED: There is a Sony camera to come…also for Nikon and Canon lens owners!

Share

Not only “pure” Sony camera and lens owners should follow SonyAlphaRumors the next days. Sony will launch an extraordinary new E-mount camera featuring a new tech: It has a sort of  [shoplink 18446 ebay]Contax AX (here one Bay)[/shoplink] focusing system! You see it at work on the video on top. I don’t know yet the very details of the Sony solution but the sensor can move on the Z-axis. This has been done to fully support non Sony lenses. It’s the trojan hourse from Sony to make it easy for Canon and Nikon lens owners to switch over to Sony. I am waiting for the exact details on tech from my Sony sources (will get them soon). Nikon, Canon user (but obviously also Pentax and so on) will be very tempted to buy this camera!

UPDATE: This is a report from a source that tested the camera:

The sensor is mount on a tray that slide in Z direction. It allows approximately 18mm of focus adjustment. As actuator you have  strong piezoelectric servo, this make for rapid movement back-forth if selected that option.

Meantime: How the Contax AX AF works:
The Contax AX unique autofocus system works with manual focus lenses by moving the film plane inside the camera. A side benefit of this arrangement is that it allowed the AX to feature a macro mode which worked much like a built-in 10 mm extension tube, allowing for a magnification ratio higher than 1:1 without the use of bellows or extension tubes (Source: Wikipedia Contax). Link to [shoplink 18446 ebay]Contax AX auctions on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].

Stay tuned, I will get details and pics of the new camera soon!

(SR5) SAL-120F28 and SEL-70400G2 to be announced soon too!

Share

Sony Germany is showing two more news lenses: The SAL-120F28 (Click here) and SEL-70400G2 (Click here). And I am sure many more A and E-mount lenses are ready to be announced soon. The SEL-70400G2 should have the same design as the A-mount version, the SAL-70400G2. That could be the reason why it keeps the “G2” mark!

I stress you again. Stay tuned on SAR and spread the word to Nikon and Canon friends. Sony has something “special” for them too! Subscribe the RSS feed (Click here) and Twitter (Click here) stream and the Facebook fan page (Click here) in order to not miss any news!

(SR5) First Full Frame Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 E-mount lens listed at Sony Germany.

Share

Click on the image to enlarge and read the details!

One month ago I told you that one of the four Full Frame E-mount lenses that Sony will announce soon is the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 lens. And finally we can be 100% sure it’s coming because the SEL35F28Z has been listed at Sony Germany (Click here). And there is a full PDF file (download here/ and in english here) that describes the lens (Thanks Eddy for finding this). The text says:

The Sonnar T FE 35mm F2.8 ZA is compatible with the range of a 35mm format image sensor. The other lenses are compatible with the range of an APS-C  sized image sensor. A camera equipped with a 35mm format image sensor can be set to shoot at APS-C size. For details on how to set your camera, refer to its instruction manual.

The image on top shows the specs and the size of the lens. It’s quite small compared with the [shoplink 8450 ebay]Zeiss 24mm f/1.8[/shoplink] lens!

As I told you yesterday the E-mount FF camera (or better said cameras!) are one of the best keep Sony secrets. I know they are coming but I am still not 100% sure if they will be announced within 2013 or in January 2014. Stay tuned on SAR the next couple of days and weeks. Images are coming for sure and also many more camera and lens info. Working day and (sometimes) night lately to work on reliable rumors! And very important. Not Sony camera/lens owners should follow SAR. Canon and Nikon lens owners should follow us too! Spread the word guys!

Reminder: Zeiss once made the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C Biogon T* for the M-mount system (you can find the lens here at Amazon US or [shoplink 19913 ebay]eBay[/shoplink]).

(SR5) UPDATED: New QX “Smart Shot” pictures! Has in Image Stabilization!

Share

And here are a couple of new pictures of the QX10 “lenscamera”. As you see it comes in white too (via Digicameinfo). I also got info from my sources (some of the info matches with Digicaminfo sources). So here are the news:

1) The name of these cameras is actually “Smart Shot“. It’s a mix between Smart-phone and Cyber-Shot.

2) The SmartShot lenses have in lens stabilization!

3) Again, it’s compatible with all Android and iOS devices via Playmemories APP (the new version will come out soon. My sources tested the BETA version). Connection via Wi-Fi/NFC

4) Videos in HD video 1080/30p, format MP4. Can be recorded with low noise even in dark places.

5) The captured image is saved automatically in both the smartphone and memory in the camera.

6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.

7) The QX10 has the same 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and  f/3,3-5.9 lens as the Sony WX150 ($400 on Amazon). WIll be priced at $250.

8) The QX100  costs $450. That is $300 less than the price of the RX100MII camera ($748 here at Amazon) that features the same sensor and lens! Greta pricing! You can get the best compact camera yet on market for $300 less.

Announcement on Tuesday (Spetember 4). Follow the event live on SonyAlphaRumors!!!

IMPORTANT: I promise you to post an image of a new E-mount camera the day after the event. Stay tuned :)

UPDATE: Some more images of the QX10 and QX100:

Sony Image Sensor Business is growing (Bloomberg).

Share

Bloomberg published an interesting article about the financial situation of the Sony Image sensor business. And Image Sensor World analyzed the key data which I will report here:

Here are the main statements:

  • Sony’s revenue from the image sensors gained an estimated 30% last year.
  • About 80% of the imaging sensors Sony produces are sold outside the company, said Masahito Takeda, a spokesman for Sony.
  • Most of the 10.9B yen ($111M) operating profit last quarter from Sony’s device division was generated by image sensor sales, Deutsche Bank estimates.

The article also quotes interesting TSR market data:

  • Global shipments of the imaging sensor will probably grow to 3.14B units this year
  • Sensors made by Sony sold for an average of $7.30 each, almost four times the $1.93 that Samsung got for similar chips, based on 2012 unit sales and revenue estimates by TSR
  • Sony’s revenue from image sensors rose to $2.45B in 2012 from $1.89B a year earlier, garnering 32% of the global market
  • Omnivision ranked second with 14.4%, followed by Samsung at 12.9%.

The system camera sensor business plays a minor role here. Smartphone and Tablet Image sensors are by far more important for Sony.
