Sony is now providing AP press journalists Sony Alpha gear. Dpreview interviewed the head of AP to discuss the Sony deal:

We have a few hundred staff photographers around the world, and about that many video camera. We’re kitting each photographer and videographer out with four or five lenses and a couple of camera bodies, that’s a large investment. The vast majority of the stills photographers will get a9 Mark IIs. We will get some a7R IVs for the videographers, and a couple for some of our entertainment shooters who do a lot of portraits. But the standard kit will be an a9 Mark II.

AP to Equip all Visual Journalists Globally with Sony Imaging Products

Sony Electronics to become AP’s exclusive global imaging provider for photo and video journalism

July 23, 2020 – Sony Electronics Inc. a global leader in imaging, and The Associated Press, the trusted global news organization, announced today a new collaboration that will make Sony the exclusive imaging products and support provider for AP news photographers and video journalists around the world. With journalists in nearly 250 locations in 100 countries, AP provides factual, compelling journalism in all formats, including 3,000 photos and 200 videos each day. The news agency has a distinguished history of powerful visual journalism, winning the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography — AP’s 54th Pulitzer and 32nd for photography — and garnering recognition from the Royal Television Society for excellence in video.A wide variety of Sony’s imaging solutions products will begin delivery immediately, including the full-frame mirrorless Alpha™ cameras, 4K XDCAM video cameras and an assortment of Sony’s 57 E-mount lenses including G Master™ models.“We are extremely honored to announce this collaboration with The Associated Press, an organization with an incredible history in journalism that continues to raise the bar for global news reporting and delivery,” said Neal Manowitz, deputy president for Imaging Products and Solutions Americas at Sony Electronics. “The Associated Press is a universally trusted brand for news information in the world. We are honored to equip AP’s journalists with our technology and support, giving them the opportunity to capture, transmit and deliver imagery in ways they never could before.”

“Sony’s history of innovation aligns well with AP’s, and with our vision for the future of visual journalism,” said Derl McCrudden, AP deputy managing editor for visual and digital journalism. “AP is committed to providing the best imagery to our member news organizations and customers across the globe. Adopting Sony’s cutting-edge equipment and technology allows us to do that, by enabling our photographers and video journalists to be faster and more flexible, ultimately creating better visual journalism.”

When the transition to Sony is complete, AP’s video journalists and photographers will for the first time be equipped with the same brand of cameras, allowing for seamless collaboration among the news agency’s journalists as they tell the world’s stories in whatever medium is right for the moment.

AP visual journalists will be able to share Sony’s cameras and lenses, as well as the images they capture, to produce a news report unhindered by technical limitations.

“The new mirrorless technology in Sony’s cameras allows for a completely silent operation, meaning our photojournalists can work in environments without interrupting the scene around them,” said AP Director of Photography J. David Ake. “This is a huge leap forward in photojournalism.”

In addition to delivery of product, AP and Sony will work together to improve workflow and efficiency of field operations, including testing of 5G capabilities.

Sony offers 5G through its Xperia™ product line, which uses technology from its cameras, professional monitors and audio devices.

New Sony A7sIII tidbits: Has S-Cinetone colorscience and Movie Edit add-on compatibility

Share

A7sIII now listed at BHphoto and in Germany at Fotokoch

I got another report from a source….Thanks :)

This is what he says:

The A7Siii will have the S-Cinetone colorscience.
The sensor will be an Exymos R CMOS Sensor.
Sony will add Movie Edit add-on compatibility for Image Stabilization in post. So far only RX0m2, RX100m7, and ZV-1 are compatible with that app. This is how they plan to match Cannon’s IBIS, it won’t be as good but at least it won’t be “warpy”. Also, the slight crop will be used to achieve this.
15+ Stops of dynamic range.
C4K in addition to UHD will be available.

Overall this camera is similar to the A7R4 tweaked in the same way as ZV-1 with similar specs to the FX9, but with a 12MP sensor. Like I said before there is a slight crop. Nothing seems extraordinary on paper except that EVF, but realistically there is no 4K60 10-bit internal 600Mbit camera on the market that can record unlimited video without overheating, with great autofocus and no fan.

Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE review by Marc Alhadeff

Share

Marc Alhadeff from SonyAlphaBlog tested the new Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE lens and concluded:

The Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton (1000 euros) is a special lens: it offers super soft background blur and smooth transition from the area in focus to the ones in the blur
It provide a very nice rendering for portraits with glow for close portraits shoots
Closed down to F2.8 , centre sharpness increase a lot and it keeps a nice soft background
Buyers of this lens will mostly use it between F1.2 and F2 for its unique rendering and will maybe complement it with a Voigtländer 50mm F1.2 Nokton , if you prefer a more classical large aperture 35mm like the excellent Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art

Pros
Very good background blur
Soft transitions
Glow effect at f1.2 if you like it
Excellent sharpness in the centre as of F2.8
Good bokeh wide open
Very good flare resistance
Nice sunstars including at F1.2
Low distorsion
Small and light
EXIF transmission
Build quality is very good
Vignetting very low as of F2

Average
Strong vignetting at F1.2 and F1.4
Bokeh in polygons when closed down to F2 and beyond

Cons
very Bad CA , still visible at F4
Corners sharpness
Price

You can preorder the new Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 SE lens at BHphoto.

Some more A7sIII rumored specs and info

Share

A7sIII now listed at BHphoto and in Germany at Fotokoch

I got info from five more people who sent me rumors for the first time. So I am not sure all is 100% correct so take the following info with a bit more caution than usual. I posted this info today and on July 28 we will see whom of them was right :)

Source 1:

  • AF system is the almost the same as a7r4
  • The video record button is now on the top of the camera, places behind the shutter button.
  • 4K RAW output yes, but not sure if it supports 4K 120fps RAW output. Did not try but it says it’s 16bit RAW output.
  • I did not have a chance to test out the RAW output because the firmware is not available, apparently Atomos is working on it to support a7sIII’s hdmi signal.
  • dynamic range is 15 tested by Sony, so i guess it’s ard 13-14 in real life.

Source 2:

  • Dials: Looking from the back panel of the camera, video dial for video mode selection left to EVF, photo dial for photo mode selection right to EVF. Exposure dial unchanged.
  • Screen: Touch function available when navigating the menu.
  • Ports: Removable port door. Two usb-c, one micro hdmi, no flash sync port.

Source 3:

  • Here is something unfortunate, there will be a crop on the 4K. A small one, similar to a7s2.
  • Also, ONLY Up to 4k60 will be 10bit 4:2:2 internal.

Source 4:

  • They are claiming to not have overheating issues for at least 1hr even at the highest framerate.

Source 5:

  • I can confirm 4k60 10 bit unlimited recording time.
  • I can confirm at least 180fps 1080p with full AF and sound.
  • Downsampled 1080p from 4K, making this the best 1080p hybrid ever made! No line skipping or pixel binning.
  • No internal RAW.
  • New codec similar to FX9.
  • No 6K.
My guess is that most of the info is actually correct.

It’s finally time to join our Sony A7sIII facebook group!

On July 28 10:00 be sure to be online here on SonyAlphaRumors to follow the video livestream event. To not miss any future rumors and leaks follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Disqus.
