On January 8 at 5pm PT you can follow the Sony CES press conference live here on SonyAlphaRumors (there should be a video live stream). Like I told you before Sony usually does not announce new cameras at this show.
The only thing that gives us a very tiny bit of hope that we might get a camera is the fact that Sony registered a new camera with the code “WW541200”. But that camera might as well be announced in February before the CP+ show start.
To give you a very general heads-up of what’s Sony’s goal for 2017. It is without doubt another year where Sony will focus on the FE lens development and release. This includes a new 16-35mm GM and new telephoto lenses. And a few A-mount lenses will get an update too.
There will be of course new cameras (A7 mark III and the A7rIII or A9). But the crazy camera release circle Sony had back in 2013-2014-2015 is definitely over.
Canon Mount will be the first wave of 14mm lens product in early January – maaaaaaybe some Sony E Mount will be included in those shipments but he said that’s a ‘pie in the sky’ expectation. More likely Sony E Mount will appear in latter January / early February.

Juan: “Take Kayo interviewed me about my Beers And Cameras meet-ups. I talk about how I use my Sony, like my M-Mount glass and other things. Think your audience may find it entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM1V020t6l0”
Scott: “A personal project shot on a mixed bag of Sony cameras. I normally work on weddings, making films and taking photos so it was good to leave the work behind and try something different. This film was shot on the A7s, A7ll, A7r, RX100mk4, RX10mk2 and the Phantom3 Pro. The lenses used were the FE90mm f2.8, Batis 85 f1.8, FE 35 f1.4 and 24-70 f4. https://vimeo.com/181710326”
In Japan Sony is conducting surveys (see image above) to provide input in a-mount lens development (A-mount and not E-mount!). Note that when Sony writes “121-300” they don’t mean a zoom but a prime lens within that focal length range! This means when they ask you if you want a “121-300 F2.0” lens they mean a f/2.0 lens within that range.
So let’s help Sony and give our SAR community shot on this. I copied their focal length suggestions…
Sony sent out an invitation for a press conference at the CES show. The conference will be streamed live on Ustream on January 4th at 5:00 PM PST (Las Vegas time).
Last year Sony officially said that they do not announce major A or E-mount stuff on such events because they prefer to get the full spotlight. Expect a new Sony announcement by late January or early February.
So far the only “leaked” info is that Sony registered a new camera in Asia. And it should be a new compact fixed lens camera (maybe a new RX). A new Sony A7 mark III is rumored to be announced in late Spring.
I don’t think we will ever see a Super High End A-mount camera. But this is a rendered image showing how it could look. It’s would be an expensive professional tool similar to the $6,000 Canon EOS-1D X Mark II.
But let’s get real, Sony will never do a camera like that…or not?
