(SR3) 135mm FE will be announced months after the 16-35mm GM (and few specs)

Share

Image on top shows the Mitakon 135mm f/1.4. The new Sony FE should be f/1.8 or 2.0

Yesterday a trusted source confirmed both the 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and the 135mm FE lens are due to be launched this year. Today a new source shared few more details that I think could be correct:

There’s almost no chance the new 135 GM will be anounced together with 16-35 GM. The zoom is ready right now and the 135 is still being developed. We are pretty sure we will have to wait AT LEAST 3 months.

What is almost sure for about FE 135 GM:
– lack of stabilization
– weather sealed
– aperture is still a question but for now we can say it will be f/1.8 for 80% chance. There were ideas that it should be even f/1.4 as the target of the new lens is to be a killer for other portrait lenses but PERSONALLY I don’t give big chances on that. The value of f/2.0 is rather impossible.

Thanks Source!

Sending a Sony a7S to the stratosphere to film the Northern Lights

Share

I just got this mail from Bryan:

My name is Bryan Chan, representing a group of aerospace researchers and engineers called Night Crew Labs. I’m writing to share a story and video about sending a Sony a7S to near-space to film the aurora borealis (northern lights) from the stratosphere, for the first time ever! The camera payload reached a max altitude of 78,254 feet.

My team traveled to Alaska and launched a weather balloon along with a Sony a7S with a fast f/1.4 lens at ISO 51,000, and Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder to capture video with sweeping views of the aurora. The recovery of the camera was another adventure in itself, as we had to hire a plane to find it and snowshoe out several miles in freezing temperatures.

The aurora stratosphere video we put together can be found here: https://youtu.be/vlyavVJ-ZXE  (SAR note: I embeded the video at bottom of this message)
Recovery video here: https://youtu.be/BsIEGbRTOQ4
More information behind the project is here: http://nightcrewlabs.com/projects/alaska/aurora/

Thanks,
Bryan

Great work folks!

Sony A7 for $948 is now the most sold Sony FF at Amazon (and the best camera for the price)

Share

Sometimes “Older” camera come back to live. This is the case of the Sony A7 which now sells for $948 only at Adorama, BHphoto and Amazon. With the 28-70mm lens you get it for $1098 only. It’s the first Sony camera selling for under $999 (as original “new” and not as “Open Box” or “Imported”).

If Image Quality is what you are after no other camera in the $1,000 price range beats the A7 yet. And that’s why it’s selling hot according to the latest Amazon sales ranking.

The A7 is selling for under 1.000€ in Europe too at Amazon.de, Amazon.it, Amazon.fr and Amazon.es.

(SR4) 16-35mm GM and 135mm FE lenses coming soon…

Batis 135mm f/2.8 vs the [shoplink 48572]Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount[/shoplink] (CameraSize).

Last week we reported about a possible imminent announcement of the 16-35mm FE GM lens and another 135mm FE lens. Well today a trusted source confirmed two lenses are coming:

“Like 16-35mm f2.8 GM and 135mm portrait lens.”

So still no info on the aperture of the 135mm lens but it will be faster than the newly announced Batis 135mm f/2.8. Sony is expected to announced the 16-35mm GM lens between late May and June. I don’t know if the 135mm FE will be announced together with the 16-35mm GM or sometimes later.
