YES !!!! Sony registered a new High End E-mount camera in Asia!!!

Oh folks! After months of quietness the past 24 hours have been a full rumor time job here! I am working a lot on new camera rumors but one thing I can tell you for sure: The boring non-Sony-announcement time is going to be over soon!

Today Sony registered a new camera in Asia. it has the code “WW271448” (via Nokishita). And there are two good reasons why I can say this is a new High End Sony E-mount camera

  • It has 5.1GHz Wifi capabilities which is something you expect from a Sony high end camera.
  • The past 24 hours I got reliable info about a new High End Camera Model. I will post more about that AFTER the April 30 Sony announcement (which is for new Cine gear only).

So please start to wake up from the long Hibernation time…I don’t want you to miss anything :)

More patents disclosing a Sony medium format camera concept with curved sensor!

I spotted another Sony patent describing lenses designed for a medium format camera with curved sensor. Of course, we don’t know yet if Sony is serious about this or if this is just a theoretical exercise and way to protect possible future ideas by patenting them.

These are the Sony patented lenses designed for the curved sensor medium format camera:

  • 387mm f/2.8 (lens length: 679mm) – in Full Frame terms this is a 240mm f/1.7
  • 323mm f/2.8 (lens length: 576mm) – in Full Frame terms this is a 200mm f/1.7
  • 258mm f/2.8 (lens length: 380mm) – in Full Frame terms this is a 160mm f/1.7
  • 161mm f/2.8 – in Full Frame terms this is a 100mm f/1.7
  • 84mm f/2.9 (lens length: 123mm) – in Full Frame terms this is a 52mm f/1.7 (it would be only 2cm longer than the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 FE)

I think it would make a lot of sense for Sony to make a medium format camera with curved sensor: the curved sensor allows for a more compact lens design (around 30% less in size and weight). It would give Sony a distinctive advantage over the competition!

The real problem is price. Making such curved sensor is likely to be a bit more costly. But let’s say for the sake of argument Sony can match the pricing of the Fuji GF camera system which ranges between the $4,500 of the GFX50R and the $9,900 of the GFX100…here is the question you gotta answer:

Would you buy into an new Sony medium format system with curved sensor tech?

On April 30 Sony might finally give us at least a “Hint” of how the Sony A7sII successor will be?

The only reliable rumor I got so far about the April 30 announcement is about three new Cine E-mount lenses. Still no news about the A7sII successor. But the past hours some Sony and Cine influencers started to whisper about the Sony announcement saying that it will actually be a big news day. Now, this is really subjective and what’s “Big” for them may be of “no interest” for us E-mount shooters (it could be a camcorder).

I still have hope that Sony will do what Canon did with the EOS-R5: Do a sort of “teaser” announcement where they give us at least a release timeline and some general specs of the new A7sII successor. I hope that’s the “big” thing those influencers are talking about. But like I said, I have no solid confirmation on this but I hope that I am right :)

This is what the A7sIII will be according to Sony (Statement 1, Statement 2, Statement 3):

  • Definitely at least “4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2″
  • Some features will go “beyond the expectations”
  • And “of course more battery power, increased AF accuracy – many things!”

This is the little I got from one reliable source who saw the prototype:

  • The prototype camera recorder 4k120p (and had no 8K recording)
  • The prototype camera was much thicker and had a cooling vent
  • Same kind of A9II improvements (AF, build quality, weather sealing)

RUMOR: Samyang 75mm f/1.8 FE will go on sale on Monday for 389€

One of my trusted sources told me the new Samyang 75mm f/1.8 FE will go on sale on Monday for 389€. That’s 150€ cheaper than the Samyang 85mm f/1.4. So I wonder how many will jump on this lens instead of the 85mm version. Well if size matters for you the 75mm is definitely a lot smaller…

Samyang will announce the new 75mm f/1.8 FE autofocus prime lens on April 20! Images and Full press text already leaked

Samyang posted this teaser image for a new Sony FE lens. Strange enough Samyang Korea made a mistake and already published the full product page. Here are the images with the official press text:

This lens is small and lightweight to carry anywhere, anytime and has a clear resolution that can capture the beauty of everyday life and people. The angle of view and shooting distance are natural, making it ideal for recording everyday life. Thanks to the large aperture, F1.8 and excellent optical system, the bokeh is beautiful, round, and the background is calm, making the subject stand out more. Experience a quiet and accurate AF system for video shooting and a new Custom Switch for custom modes.

Optimized for portraits and everyday photography, the AF 75mm F1.8 FE is compact, lightweight, yet has great performance and versatility. It’s only 230g, so it’s perfect for taking photos on a variety of topics anytime, anywhere. The optical system is sophisticatedly designed with Samyang’s original optical technology, providing excellent resolution from corner to corner of the image to the surroundings. In particular, the large diameter of F1.8 presents a large and beautiful bokeh, the bokeh is more clean and the background blur is more calm by correcting various aberrations and designing the optimal optical path.
Thanks to the new Stepping Motor (STM), AF performance is quiet and accurate, allowing you to take more natural portraits. Also, here comes the new Custom Switch! You can switch to Aperture Control Mode according to Modes 1 and 2, and you will be able to select more various shooting modes with the upcoming firware updates. Experience Samyang’s next-generation lens in new angle of view.

The AF 75mm F1.8 FE is only 230g in weight and 69mm in height, so it’s easy to carry and fits perfectly with a compact mirrorless camera. Enjoy the clear image quality with the compact telephoto lens that can be used anytime, anywhere.

After switching from range finder to SLR and to mirrorless system, the forgotten 75mm angle of view is now reborn as a full-frame AF lens! Take your everyday life with the legendary angle of view 75mm that captures both the story and the character.

The subject and background are effectively separated, creating an impressive sense of depth when the large round bokeh, calm background blurring, and high contrast achieve the optimal balance. Samyang’s original optical design delivers unique depth of field even in a similar angle of view and aperture. Capture your beautiful everyday life more impressively.

Only by carefully designing and simulating the path of light can you complete a large and beautiful bokeh that cannot be captured by a mobile phone. We hope you will experience the best bokeh that is beautifully designed after many years of research in shape, color, border, and minimized chromatic aberration.

Samyang’s original technology put everything in concise 10 lenses in 7 groups. In order to effectively control chromatic aberration, three extra low-dispersion lenses (ED) with achromat are used, and high-refractive lenses (HR) with excellent refractive index are used to achieve a small size of Ø65 x 69mm. In addition, the UMC coating is applied to minimize unnecessary internal reflections, resulting in high contrast and sharp images.

Now Autofocus needs to consider not only how more accurately and quickly it captures images, but also how quiet and smooth it is. Thanks to the newly researched and developed STM (Stepping Motor), a larger and heavier focus lens group can be controlled more quietly and precisely, providing excellent image quality in photos and videos.

Equipped with the Custom Wwitch, shooting and operation is more intuitive and simple. You can easily select various functions such as Aperture Control Mode from the Switch, and enjoy the shooting mode that suits your personal preference. More functions will be added through firmware update in the future.

No info on pricing yet.
