(SR4) 70-200mm GM pricing to be announced within weeks (double the pricing of the f/4.0 FE)

FE70-200mm

I got this info via a Sony rep. He doesn’t want me to share the exact price info but he said we can expect the 70-200mm GM lens to cost slightly more than double the price of the current [shoplink 47257 ebay]70-200mm f/4.0 FE lens (at least for his country)[/shoplink]. Sony’s current plan is to unveil the pricing within the next few weeks.

And there is a small update on the 24-70mm GM lens. It will ship beginning of June according to BHphoto (Click here).

(SR4) Zeiss says next Loxia (Telephoto?) should be due at Photokina in September

Loxia_21mm_f:28

Zeiss managers do not keep secrets their plans about the Loxia lens range. A SAR reader wrote me this:

I was chatting with a Zeiss customer representative about choosing the right portrait lens a few months ago (shortly after the Milvus line came out). First he recommended the Batis 85, and I indicated I really enjoy the Loxia 50 which I have since autofocus on my first gen A7’s stink. After going back and forth for a while he recommended [shoplink 46212 ebay]the 135 APO[/shoplink]. He also hinted that if I liked Loxia that much I’d have to wait until Phototinka 2016 for a portrait option. So, in regards to your recent rumor that Zeiss is releasing 3 new lenses around October, I would expect/hope one of them will be the Loxia telephoto Zeiss has hinted at before. No idea what specific focal length is being considered though.

I guess that next Loxia will be a telephoto lens…85, 105 or 135mm???

Sony is “investigating” the possibility to make new fast f/1.8 APS-C E-mount primes

[shoplink 46941 ebay]16-70mm[/shoplink]

The last APS-C E-mount lens got announced on August 27 2013. It was the [shoplink 46941 ebay]Zeiss 16-70mm lens[/shoplink].

It’s nice Sony is still committed in making great APS-C E-mount cameras like the A6300. But they really need to focus back on making APS-C E-mount lenses too! I know we can use FE lenses on the A6300 but these are bigger and more expensive than “natively” designed APS-C E-mount lenses. I hope Sony will find some time and resources to make some of these new lenses. There is some hope as I just got this from a source:

I had the chance to talk with a street photographer in Japan who says he participated as a photographer in a Sony marketing research focus group. Those in the group used A6300 with all current APS-C and full-frame Sony lenses and were asked to complete questionnaries and answer interview questions about their experience and about their wishes for future lenses. The questionnarie and the interview asked about their preferences for prime vs zoom, focal lengths, max aperture, use of OSS stabilisation, low price vs high image quality, and whether they want and are prepared to pay more for depth-of-field scales and for pancake designs. They were also asked about their thoughts on specific hypothetical lenses, they were told these lenses don’t exist nor is Sony working on them but the marketing team wanted to know what they had to say assuming such lenses existed, these imaginary lenses were described in the questionnarie as an APS-C 23.5mm f/1.8 OSS and an APS-C 18.5mm f/1.8 OSS both with a price and image quality similar to the 35mm f/1.8 OSS.

Meyer Optik Goerlitz will launch a third E-mount Trioplan lens in 2017

Trioplan

It’s quite impressive and unexpected to see that Meyer Optik raised over $600.000 !!!!!!!!! on Kickstarter to finance their latest 50mm f/2.9 Trioplan lens development. The campagn was that successfull that they updated their rewards list by adding a third new Trioplan lens:

Restoring the Trioplan lens line means that all good things come in threes. Our major 2017 lens announcement will be the third and final Trioplan in our line-up.

The lens is surely to come with native E-mount too.

Sony A68 US gets an over two month shipment delay! New product release roadmap delayed too because of the Kumamoto damage?

A68

Yesterday many US stores suddenly changed the Sony A68 shipping date from May 19 to August 4 (See at Amazon and BHphoto). A source told me that this is due the Kumamoto sensor production stop. Because of that Sony had to postpone the A68 launch by two and a half months. He said the full camera release and shipment roadmap has been overhauled with some of the future new products that will be launched later than expected.

The past years Sony regularly announced new products in June. But at that stage I don’t know if the some or all of the announcements will be delayed….

SAR reader claims to have spotted the A9…

The new A9 is supposed to be a more “DSLR” alike sized camera (image above is a rendering)

A SAR reader who prefers to remain anonymous sent me this:

Walking through battery park Manhattan around 5:35pm, I came across someone walking towards 1 world trade, with a graphite looking camera with no markings or paint in a slightly larger and boxier shape than my [shoplink 47718 ebay]a7r ii[/shoplink], when I realized it was too large to be a [shoplink 47716 ebay]Fuji XT1[/shoplink] but too small to be a [shoplink 47717 ebay]Leica T[/shoplink], I looked closer and noticed the user (short chubby guy with red goatee) was using a Sony GM 24-70mm 2.8 lens on the body.
The photographer was pretty uncomfortable when I started asking questions. But I can say this. It was in fact a Sony A9(?!?) proto type, it is slightly larger than the A7Rii however it does not have a built in battery grip. Good things are it does have dual card slots, definitely sd maybe cfast, I really don’t know much about different cards, but he did say it has 2. It has a joystick for autofocus point moving. But most importantly, when he showed me the joystick, the spot where it would say 42M on my a7rii, it said Extra Fine 72M!!
He said this was one of a few prototypes out there and that it was due out end of summer for early fall release (can’t say this is real or not).
I know I am not a source or anything, but this thing was legit!!!

While the above rumor is not from a trusted source and therefore to take with a big grain of salt I can confirm via other highly reliable sources that a new High End E-mount camera will be announced by Sony: There is a 90% chance the following info is correct:

“The next generation flagship mirrorless camera from Sony will be a giant leap. It will drop a huge bomb in the imaging industry. It will not be A7III or A7RIII. It will be a new model above A7 series. I would say A9 (let’s name it as the new model). So the new A9 will have [shoplink 46602 ebay]dual XQD card slot[/shoplink], no CFast version, only XQD. A9 can do UNLIMITED RAW burst, UNLIMITED. The camera wont pause for buffering.”

(SR2) Some A9 specs info…

Some more A9 info from anonymous new source (therefore take it with a big grain of salt). He says he is in the Broadcast business and a Sony manager told him this about the A9:

From the small snippets I have gleaned:
Sensor around 70-80 Mpixel.
Better IBIS
They are going to sort out this buffer overflow issue
Better HDR  whatever that means.
More “3D depth of sensor” I think they may be looking at some form of advanced “stacked sensor”

If the specs are correct this sounds ok to me! Just wondering how much it will cost if we already have to spill out $3,200 of the Sony A7rII.

But again keep in mind that this is a new source. What highly reliable sources told us so far about the A9 is this:

“The next generation flagship mirrorless camera from Sony will be a giant leap. It will drop a huge bomb in the imaging industry. It will not be A7III or A7RIII. It will be a new model above A7 series. I would say A9 (let’s name it as the new model). So the new A9 will have [shoplink 46602 ebay]dual XQD card slot[/shoplink], no CFast version, only XQD. A9 can do UNLIMITED RAW burst, UNLIMITED. The camera wont pause for buffering. The size will be bigger than [shoplink 46453 ebay]A7RII[/shoplink], but smaller than conventional DSLR, such as [shoplink 46766 ebay]5D3[/shoplink].”
