(SR3) New Sony medium format rumor: 101 Megapixel mirrorless system camera at Photokina?

Alpa camera with the new IQ3 100MP System with Sony sensor

The following is quite a challenging rumor to evaluate. While the source is legit he himself is not sure if the information he got from Sony has been “correctly communicated”. But anyway here is what he told me:

A high ranking Sony distribution guy just told me not to be too fast going towards Hasselblad.  He hinted towards Sony releasing a medium format camera at Photokina together with a series of new lenses.  As the presentation of the Hasselblad I was pretty disappointed as 4K video did not work yet and the Phocus software couldn’t process the raw files right, it will take until June/July anyway to decide if this makes sense – so I will wait until Photokina.  There seems to be a good chance that we see the world’s first mirrorless medium format camera from Sony.

I find it a bit unlikely that Sony will launch both a new High End FF E-mount camera and a new medium format system camera this year. It may be that the Sony distribution guy meant that the A9 will have “medium format quality” or so…

That said I would love to get a mirrorless system camera with the new 101 Megapixel sensor from Sony. But I still think they should first use their resources to launch some great A-mount stuff and some new APS-C E-mount lens…

Those lenses usually do offer a very high optical quality for the money. Samyang is going to be the first company offering Full Frame autofocus E-mount lenses for an affordable price!

Press release:

May 3rd, 2016, Seoul, Korea – The global optics brand, Samyang Optics (http://www.samyanglensglobal.com) today announced the long-awaited launch of two autofocus lenses: 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 lenses for Sony E mount Mirrorless cameras with full frame sensor size. The new 14mm and 50mm are the widest and brightest lenses in their classand offer superb quality images to photographers. This launching expands the boundaries of Samyang Optics photo lens line-up from manual focus only, to now include autofocus lenses.

Optimised Optical Design as Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Lens
Both 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC and 50mm F1.4 AS IF UMC are specifically designed to work in harmony with full frame mirrorless cameras in Sony E mount. The flow of light is devised based on the uniqueness of the distance from glass to sensor in mirrorless cameras to create optimal performance. Along with portability of mirrorless lenses, the 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 are compatible with full frame sensors to deliver the wideness and sharpnessof image to photographers.

The 67mm filter diameter brings the maximum amount of light into the lens to create the best work of light in photography. The 14mm F2.8 is the widest angle available in the market and the F1.4 of 50mm and F2.8 of 14mm apertures are by far the brightest of full frame mirrorless lenses, offeringa beautiful bokeh effect and the best quality images under various exposure conditions.

Based on Samyang Optics’ exceptional optical technology, aspherical lenses have been included in both lenses to minimise aberration and unnecessary light dispersion, delivering high resolution from the centre to the corners of the image.

AF Performance and Ergonomic Design Based on Class-Leading Technology
These new products will be the first autofocus lenses in over 40 years of Samyang’s class-leading core optics technologies.Samyang has captured the essence of world leading image technology with their manual focus lenses and reinterpreted it into autofocus lenses. Photographers now can enjoy the prime manual lens image quality and autofocus lens. These new 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 are compatible with both phase detect and contrast detect sensors to operate fast and accurate focus detection.

The 67mm filter diameter is also the result of years of R&D for best handling, by adding stability to the photo-taking experience. Also the minimal and sleek design and metal-housing solidify the build quality with the internal focus system.

These two new autofocus lenses from Samyang Optics will be exhibited at the Photo & Imaging 2016Show in Seoul, South Korea. The lenses will be globally available from July 2016. Further details, pricing and availability will follow.

(SR1) Rumor roundup…(A7m3, RX100m5 and Sigma E-mount).

Bildschirmfoto 2016-04-27 um 09.57.20

Here are a couple of rumors I got from anonymous sources. Those are not from trusted and known sources. They rarely are true but sometimes it happens some of those are spot on (it did happen with the A6300 and RX1rII specs lately). So let’s just read those and see if one of them will become true or not:

Source_1:
RX100M5
– release was set for June, however in light of the DL series camera’s the release is in doubt however Sony is confident that what was already planned is still superior to the Nikon offering.
– Hybrid AF will be a feature 179 Phase detect points and 135 Contrast detect points
– Continuous AF bursts 40 FPS
– EVF magnification will be 0.7x (big improvement)
– 24-80 F1.8 – F2.8 lens (longer)
– low light focus down to -4 EV
– Grip will be introduced

Source_2:
Great news!!  RX100 IV is come!! Only improvement I aware is PDAF to compete with Nikon DL cams for C-AF, improv EVF magnification, and same focal length but slightly faster f1.4 – 2.8.

Source_3:
Second confirmation I have is from Sigma regarding production of a 24mm f1.4 APS-C e-mount development. This will not happen as the recently announced MC11 adaptor can fit the existing 24mm sigma for canon lens. I did get confirmed however that for the MC11 adapter an official firmware update is coming to allow it to be used with the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 lens.

Source_4:
I got a peak behind a curtain at the CeBit today:
The A7 M3 will be likely announced in April/May with a great feature set.
The newly developed 22MP sensor features world fastest FF autofocus system. The Exomer RS sensor will also feature vastly increased readout speeds. It was designed with both still image and video image quality in mind.
This results in expected features of full sensor readout for all video modes (including 4k). Optionally pixel binning and line skipping can be activated for stunning slow motion video recording at native resolutions.

(SR4) A99 will be discontinued end of this summer

The following info comes via the one source who shared the new “GM lens line” rumor as first (read the rumor here). So it should be quite a reliable info: He said Sony plans to discontinue [shoplink 45722 ebay]the current A99[/shoplink] by end of this summer. He cannot share details yet about how the new A99 successor will be. But stay tuned on SAR. As soon as he “can” he will whisper to use some first details about the new A-mount flagship!

Sony interview: Megapixel will keep increasing. Medium format is a possibility if there is a demand for it.

[shoplink 25383 ebay][/shoplink]

Image of a [shoplink 25383 ebay]Mamiya 7 (here on eBay)[/shoplink] from Roma Nikolaev.

The Russian magazine Prophotos interviewed Sony engineers. I mention a couple of points:

  1. Sony says Megapixel number will keep increasing on future cameras.
  2. The Sony A6300 has no IBIS because Sony preferred to keep the size as compact as it gets.
  3. Sony confirms the plan to keep the A-mount well alive
  4. About going medium format: “It is a matter of the future. It is difficult to say now. We analyze the demand.

Over a year ago there were some first wild rumors about Sony considering making a [shoplink 25383 ebay]Mamiya 7 alike[/shoplink] digital mirrorless system camera. But I think Sony’s priority now is on FF E-mount. And I hope they will find the resources to bring some excitement on the A-mount system before to move on any other possible medium format project…

Tomorrow (April 21) Sony has a press presentation. They may announce the GM 70-200mm pricing

Bildschirmfoto 2016-04-08 um 09.27.11

Sony has a big event in London because of the Sony World Press Awards. And Sony invited the press for a product presentation at 10.45 London time. They will display their new FE lenses. And I hope Sony will also finally announce the FE 70-200mm GM lens pricing. The lens is supposed to start shipping in May already.

Let’s hope the GM price isn’t much higher than the [shoplink 46652 ebay]Nikon 70-200mm[/shoplink] and [shoplink 46653 ebay]Canon 70-200mm[/shoplink] competition!
