Tony Northrup speculates Sony will introduce two different A9 cameras at Photokina

Based on his long experience Tony Northrup is guessing what’s coming next from the big companies (Sony, Canon and Nikon). He does believe Sony will actually release two different A9 models at Photokina. Those would be the specs:

A9

A9r

And in 2017 we would get three more FE cameras:

A7rm3 A7m3

A7sm3

Just for fun…

Which one of the five "speculated" models would you consider to buy?

The possible Sony camera roadmap (A99II, A5300, A9, A7III)

sony-a99

It’s hard to be spot on the Sony roadmap and it’s even harder this year because we still have to evaluate the damage caused by the earthquake in Kumamoto. But let’s try to sum up what could be announced by Sony from now til end 2016:

Very likely to be introduced in 2016:
Sony A9 (70+ megapixel, bigger body, dual XQD slot)
Sony A99II (A-mount, trimmed for sport and not for high megapixel)

Uncertain:
A5300 (not sure about that camera coming soon)
A7III (it may be released in 2017 only)

Unlikely to be introduced in 2016:
Medium format camera (fixed lens or interchangeable)

Now tell us:

What's the one camera you would like to get?

(SR4) New Zeiss 135mm A-mount lens could be announced soon

[shoplink 48572]Zeiss135mm[/shoplink]

The [shoplink 48572]Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount lens[/shoplink] is rumored to be “updated” soon. A source just sent me this:

The updated 135mm Sony Zeiss for the a-mount will have the exact same optical solution, but it’ll receive weather-sealing and SSM. Apparently it’s being announced soon.

This is actually the third source sending me an info about this lens getting an update. Which means it’s likely to be a correct rumor. Finally some A-mount news :)

(SR1) Wild rumors about the possible Sony June product announcement….

sony-alpha

Here is the next roundup of rumors from anonymous sources with no tracked rumor sharing history. Those kind of rumors are rarely correct but as we have seen in the past soemtimes they are spot on. The three sources claim to have info about the next Sony product announcement:

Source 1:

I don’t know what exactly will be announced but the following things are currently in the pipeline:
RX100 V
Same thing as IV but now with phase detection autofocus
Sony A7 III:
24-28MP BSI Sensor with IBIS and  4K support.
Unnamed BSI Sensor
APS-C Camera
not sure if a5300 or a7000 no body size known…

Improved action cam
From the lens side in development
more high quality prime lenses most likely f 1.8 50mm and f 2.8 35mm
Sport / bird photography lens (price tag also for professionals) 500mm or 600mm at least f 4.0
Macro lens with 180mm and f 3.5 or 4.0
Not all of these will be announced but I would guess at least one mirorless camera.

Source 2:

Sony RX100 V is coming!@!!!@!!@!
Will have AF system from a6000 though not clear on number of PDAF and CDAF points.  I’ve also confirmed the EVF will be bigger and greatly improved magnification.    The model will also have an extra dial, so expect the body to be different, but not bigger than the previous generation.   This is all I have, and oh, June 9th is the release date I am told!!!

The same Source 2 also shared the RX100m5 specs in another mail:
– Hybrid AF will be a feature 179 Phase detect points and 135 Contrast detect points
– Continuous AF bursts 40 FPS
– EVF magnification will be 0.7x (big improvement)
– 24-80 F1.8 – F2.8 lens (longer)
– low light focus down to -4 EV
– Grip will be introduced

Source 3:

June 8 (9 in other places) announce rx200. Hybrid sensor with pd and cd, lens 24-90, ands new design, new series. Big feature, record for VR technology, immersive video and photo with pop.

(SR3) Possible Sony announcement between June 8th and 10th

sony-alpha

I got this from a source:

Dealers will get informed about new Products (camera and lenses) on the 8th of June 16. They will have sign NDA papers. So shortly after the 8th there will be an announcement by Sony.

I don’t think Sony will announce the A9 yet. There is a bit more chance to get a newentry level RX or entry level A5xxx camera. And maybe finally the 70-200mm GM price and shipment info.

Tony Northup calls the A-mount a dead system

On the video above our dear colleges Tony & Chelsea Northrup tried to predict the future of photography. And if you watch the video from minute 21 they are calling the dead of many systems including the Sony A-mount. Tony doesn’t advice anyone to buy into A-mount.

Now of course this is his very personal prediction. Officially Sony stated multiple times that they will keep developing the A-mount system. But in the past two years we got a couple of discouraging facts:

  • Many countries do not sell A-mount anymore (example Australia and Taiwan and many other Asian countries)
  • The last 24 months we got only one new A-mount camera (the A68)
  • On major shows (CES, CP+ and so on) Sony hardly advertise the A-mount system

I do certainly believe Sony will release A-mount products this year. But it’s really hard to tell if A-mount will be still alive in 3-4 years from now….

Christian Schätzle proves the next Loxia lens will be around 1cm longer than the 21mm Loxia.

Loxiabag

As you may know Zeiss recently announced a new special case for Loxia lenses (available for $386 on BHphoto). The case is made to carry four Loxia lenses. Which means there is one more Loxia lens to be announced soon as we only have three in the range yet:
Loxia 21mm at [shopcountry 46456].
Loxia 35mm at [shopcountry 47046].
Loxia 50mm at [shopcountry 47047].

SAR readers Christian Schätzle got the chance to “test” the new Loxia bag and actually discovered a small interesting detail. The fourth “free spot” is actually around 1cm deeper than the 21mm Loxia spot (which is the longest lens of the three). This is another small indirect confirm that the next lens will be a tele lens (85mm likely) with 8cm lens length. Here is the video he shared today:
