(SR5) The Zeiss fixed lens Full Frame camera will be announced on September 27

Share

One of our trusted sources confirmed the Zeiss camera teaser is a real deal. The camera will be announced in the midst of the ongoing Photokina show on September 27. Smart move to avoid all the press buzz that will go one before the Photokina show.

The source told me Zeiss intention with this camera is to show the full potential of their lens design. They couldn’t achieve the same goal by making a “normal” E-mount camera. The new lens is 100% optimized for this fixed lens camera.

Canon EOS-R specs leaked: Superb autofocus, 8fps, no IBIS, no dual slot

Share

The full Canon EOS-R specification sheet has been leaked (PDF file here). And here are some

Canon PRO points versus Sony:
1) 5,655 Autofocus points (693 for the A7III): I am actually not sure if that’s a typo in their spec sheet. 5 thousand AF points sounds really crazy!
2) EV-6: This is terrific
3) Has top-LCD
4) Fully articulated screen

Sony PRO points versus Canon:
1) ISO 100-40.000 for the Canon (Sony has ISO 100-51.200)
2) 1080 60fps while Sony can go up to 1080 120fps
3) 8fps while Sony does 10fps. It only does 2.2 fps with Dual Pixel RAW
4) No Dual Card slot
5) No IBIS
6) No LOG
7) Canon uses older 30MP sensor

Seems like Canon clearly focused on…AUTOFOCUS. Smart move I think. At least unlike Nikon they have a unique and attractive feature!

From two reliable sources: Camera is ready but Sony didn’t feel they need to rush the A7sIII…but this might change now!

Sony A7sIII:

Two very reliable sources told me that Sony has zero need to rush the A7sIII launch. A7III is still selling hot and the A7sII has no competitor yet. That’s why they didn’t launch the A7sIII yet. That said the camera is 100% ready for launch whenever Sony feels it’s the right time.

I hope that the new Panasonic FF mirrorless will finally make push the red button to Sony and launch the new camera. Unlike Canon and Nikon we can expect Panasonic to give us top-notch video features when it gets announced on September 25.

For now I do believe the High End APS-C E-mount camera will be announced first and the A7sIII will follow shortly after…

Thoughts on the new Full Frame Mirrorless war:

We can expect Canon, Nikon (and in minor measure Panasonic) to be hot topic on magazines and website for the upcoming months: Release, tests, in Stock status notifications and so on. I think it’s crucial for Sony to announce something that can take away the spotlight from the competition. They cannot afford to be on the defensive.
Honestly I don’t see the A7sIII being the camera doing that. It simply is a too specialized niche camera. A7III and A7rIII are still young on the market and a new A9II is certainly not going to be announced any time soon. I think something like a new A9r or a new medium format system camera would be dealbreaker but honestly I don’t think that’s going to happen yet…

What do you think?

The camera that can grab back attention from the Canon-Nikon launch is the...

The Canon EOS R with 24-105mm lens compared ot a classic DSLR with 24-105mm lens

These are the leaked pictures and specs of the new Canon EOS R camera and lenses. I am curious to hear if you think this is a more serious proposal than the Nikon Z or not. I am actually curious how it did come that both Canon and Nikon had the same idea to put nearly the same top screen on the camera :)

PRO points for the Canon compared to Sony:
– Dual Pixel AF
– EV-6 (wow!)
– fully articulated screen
– top LCD screen
– 28-70mm f/2.0 (wow!)
– 50mm f/1.2
– real weathersealing

CONS points for the Canon compared to Sony:
– no on sensor stabilization
– one card slot only
– likely no EYE-AF
– no joystick
– Canon sensors usually not as good as Sony sensors
