(SR3) Sony press event on April 23! New 8k camcorder coming?

Sony will have a press announcement on April 23 at 3pm (Las Vegas time). A part of the rumored new E-mount lenses (and maybe a new E-mount camera) we may get something else too: The following rumor has been shared by a trusted source. But so far I wasn’t able to fully confirm it. He said there will be a new camcorder:

similar to f5 and f55 with 8k also global shutter

I really have a hard time to think the market is ready (or even needs) an 8k Camcorder by now. Or maybe what Sony is going to show is a prototype only?

(SR5) Yes, the new Zeiss Batis is a 135mm f/2.8 lens!

A source just leaded me over to a 100% bullet proof evidence the new Zeiss Batis is a 135mm f/2.8 lens. I still don’t know the exact announcement date of the lens. Some yet to be confirmed info I got from a new source that it might be announced on April 5th. But I am really not sure about that yet.

(SR5) Definitely a Sony announcement coming in April!

Two Highly trusted and one new source confirmed Sony will have a major product announcement in April. But is going to be announced by Sony?

I am still working to get a reliable list of what we could get. So far I can share this:

90% chance: New camcorders will be announced at NAB (April 23)
80% chance: new 16-35mm f/2.8 GM
70% chance: New E-mount FF camera trimmed for speed (Low Megapixel number, fastest autofocus of all Sony cameras, around 20fps, dual SD card, joystick control, unlimited RAW recording).
70% chance: New tele E-mount lens (probably 100-400mm FE or/and a 400mm FE)

I am still struggling to understand if the new High Speed camera will be an A7 camera (maybe an A7III trimmed for speed) or if it will get a new name like “A9” or something like that….

(SR3) First Sony High End E-mount camera “spotting report”?

The following info is from a source who shared a rumor for the first time. So take it with a grain of salt. But I for sure hope he is right on this one! He told me he had the chance to see the new Sony High End E-mount camera. And this is his description:

It is not gonna be a bigger body like canon 1dx but is definitely bigger than the current generation.
The grip is chunkier and taller than the older ones.  The screen looked bigger to me as well but still you’ll have a tilting screen. No lateral hinges.

I couldn’t check about the SD card but the photographer was from sand disk so i guess the still use SD card but there’s place for 2 i guess. There’s an interesting lever/button that look like is for open the card door. They added a nipple joystick for af points selection but the rest is pretty familiar.

I couldn’t check the firmware and the final name since was masked and the software was modified.
The photographer was shooting on the real cam and the burst rate was quite impressive. I guess around 14fps or more by the sound.

I shoot on the 16-35 2.8 but for the other scenes they where using the new 100-400 even tho was all masked with tape to not show.
Size wise the 2 lens are comparable to the competition so i wouldn’t expect the zoom to be faster.

The 16-35 is pretty heavy in the hand but in line with the 24-70

To sum up what he says is:

  1. The camera is a bit bigger and has a chunkier grip
  2. Joystick control (hurray!)
  3. Impressive burst rate (probably around 20fps)
  4. 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and 100-400mm FE lens are coming too

This matches the rumor we posted via our usual trusted sources: This is a High End Camera made for PROS with low resolution sensor, around 20fps, dual SD card and priced above the current A7 series. There is also a rumor about a second High End Model with High Resolution sensor. But that camera will be announced sometimes later (maybe 2018?).

(SR4) Sony will soon announce a new 100-400mm G FE lens!


Canon 100-400mm vs Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 A-mount (via CameraSize)

Our rumors about the budget 85mm FE lens (rumor here) and the 100mm STF lens (rumor here) turned out to be correct. And the same source shared a new lens info today:

I heard from source that Sony is developing FE100-400G.
If development is in time, it will be announced with a new camera in April.

I have little doubt the source will be spot on this info too! I hope to get some confirmation soon to upgrade the rumor to SR5. The source didn’t share info about the aperture, size and possible pricing of the lens.

Lens Price Speculation
My guess is that the size will be around the same as the competition but the price may be a bit higher…
Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 A-mount at [shopcountry 56396].
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens costs around 2000 Dollar/Euro at [shopcountry 56389].
While the new Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens still got no pricing yet… [shopcountry 56390].

The camera info
We still are not sure if the new camera will be the A7III or the long time rumored new High End E-mount camera (A9?) with 20fps, low resolution sensor and super fast AF. If you plan to get the A9 join our special facebook group here.
