(SR4) Looks like we ain’t going to get a new lens along the A9II launch…

A reliable source told me that  he heard that only Sony will announce only ONE new product on their next press event in October. This means that Sony is likely to announce solely the A9II and no other new production ready lens or camera. The best we can hope for seems to see some new prototype tele lens (500mm?).

I guess the A7sIII (or A7sIV) and the A7IV will be announced in 2020…

(SR5) New leaked image of the Sony A9II !!!

Here is a new leaked image of the soon to be announced new Sony A9II. From what we heard journalists, youtubers and bloggers have been invited for the launch of this camera on the same weekend of the PhotoPlus show but not directly AT the Photoplus show.

And today also Nokishita confirmed Sony registered the “SonyA9II” camera in Asia:

It also means the camera will be announced very soon!

Sony A9II rumor recap:
– The camera will be announced in October at the same time but not AT the PhotoPlus show in NYC (October  24-26)
– The camera has the same A7rIV body with additional dial on the left.
– The big improvements are INSIDE the camera with a very new generation Sony sensor and improved autofocus
– Unconfirmed: The sensor could have 36MP resolution

Stay tuned on SAR!

Daniel Malmberg got “Hinted” the Sony A9II will be coming before the Olympics…

Leaked image of the new A9II

Professional Swedish Sports photographer Daniel Malmberg wrote this:

Sony also informed a bit about their plans for professional sports photographers.
One thing that i really like is that they will be present at more of the big sports events with loaner equipment and service.
This includes both the Euro 2020 and the Olympics in Tokyo.

Even though i don’t know about any specific details.
I also received “indirect” information, from a discussion between a Sony representative and one attendee, about the fact that there will be a new Sony camera aimed for sports photographers on the market before the Olympics next year. It was not said in “straight out word”.
But it was really clear “between the words”. (Anything else would honestly be a big surprise).

I am confident the new A9II will be announced the second half of October.

Now all we need is to get the camera specs. If “someone” would be kind enough to send me an anonymous message with the specs please use this anonymous contact box :)
Please use a  fake name so that I can recognize you in future and if possible also some evidence to support your “rumor”.

(SR3) Sony A7sII successor records 4k120p and has a cooling vent?

Image on top shows the cooling vent of the new Panasonic S1H

This rumor is from a reliable source. He had the chance to see a testing prototype of the new Sony A7sII successor some months ago. And here comes the warning: He saw a prototype months ago which means Sony might have changed some things in the meantime. Still let’s see what  he had to say:

1) The Sony A7sII successor now records 4k120p
2) It does NOT record 8K
3) The camera has a cooling vent on the back

We have still no 100% info about the exact A7sIII (name???) release date but it’s likely the camera will now be announced after  the A9II launch in early 2020.

(SR5) These are the four new Tamron FE lenses: 70-180mm, 20mm, 24mm and 35mm f/2.8

These are the specs  of the four new Tamron FE lenses that will be announced in October:

– 70-180mm f/2.8
– 20mm f/2.8
– 24mm f/2.8
– 35mm f/2.8

All four lenses have relatively compact size but are reported to still have excellent image quality. Not going to doubt that statement having seen the quality of their first two lenses!

Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 FE:
In the USA at BHphoto, Amazon, FocusCamera, BuyDig and Adorama.
In Europe it’s available at Amazon DE, Calumet DE, WexUK, Park UK, Amazon IT, Amazon FR, Amazon ES, CameraTools NL.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 FE:

That’s an approximate size comparison with the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8:

Let’s digg into the possible Sony 36MP sensor specs and performance!

I am sure the A9II will be announced in October but I am yet not 100% sure which sensor it will use. There is a fair chance the A9II will use this IMX435 36MP sensor registered end of 2018. So let’s digg into the specs:

  • 36MP sensor
  • 10fps  at 16 Bit. But frame rate goes up at 14bits!
  • It has 6 native sensitivities (from base to top as seen in the table):
    ISO50 = Conversion Gain -18dB, EI +12dB, DR 17.4EV
    ISO200 = Conversion Gain 0dB, EI +6dB, DR 15.4EV
    ISO800 = Conversion Gain +18dB, EI 0dB, DR 13.4EV
    ISO12800 = Conversion Gain +36dB, EI +6dB
    ISO102400 = Conversion Gain +54dB, EI +6dB
    ISO1638.4K = Conversion Gain +72dB, EI +24dB
  • IMX435 STARVIS use Hecx Native Conversion Gain to Produce more SNR in Dark Scene: (ISO 15 ~ 17.5EV/ISO 100 ~ 15.4EV/…/ISO 409600 ~ 6.9EV)
  • If readout all Conversion Gain, the Landscape can be extended to 120dB, like the high SNR sensor sony displayed on IEDM 2018. But IMX435 seems impossible to do this. It’s not a still picture style sensor.
  • Its full well capacity at base is particularly impressive at 605k e-, A7SII sensor IMX235 is “only” 159K e- with much bigger photosite. This again highlights the power of Exmor RS.”

Sony A9II rumor recap:
– The camera will be announced in October (probably around mid October)
– The camera has the same A7rIV body with additional dial on the left.
– The big improvements are INSIDE the camera with a very new generation Sony sensor and improved autofocus
– Unconfirmed: The sensor could have 36MP resolution and the camera price be close to $5,000.
